9 Signs of Low Haemoglobin
Low haemoglobin usually means anemia, where the blood cannot carry oxygen as efficiently as normal. Symptoms depend on how low the haemoglobin is and how quickly it falls.
๐ฃ 1. Fatigue
โ Low energy and persistent tiredness are very common
โ Normal daily activities may feel more exhausting
๐ฃ 2. Pale Skin
โ Skin, lips, gums, or the inner eyelids may look paler than usual
โ Pallor is more noticeable in moderate or severe anemia
๐ฃ 3. Shortness of Breath
โ Even mild activity may cause breathlessness
โ This happens because less oxygen is being carried to the tissues
๐ฃ 4. Fast Heartbeat or Palpitations
โ The heart may beat faster to compensate for reduced oxygen delivery
โ Some people feel pounding or fluttering in the chest
๐ฃ 5. Dizziness or Light-Headedness
โ You may feel faint, weak, or unsteady
โ Symptoms may worsen when standing quickly or exercising
๐ฃ 6. Headache
โ Reduced oxygen delivery may contribute to headaches
โ Poor concentration may also occur
๐ฃ 7. Cold Hands and Feet
โ Reduced circulation and oxygen delivery can make the extremities feel cold
โ This is not specific to anemia and can have other causes
๐ฃ 8. Weakness or Reduced Exercise Tolerance
โ Walking, climbing stairs, or exercising may become more difficult
โ Muscle weakness can become more noticeable as anemia worsens
๐ฃ 9. Chest Pain
โ Severe anemia can put extra strain on the heart
โ Chest discomfort is especially concerning in people with heart disease
๐ฃ Common Causes
โ Iron deficiency, often from blood loss
โ Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
โ Heavy menstrual bleeding
โ Gastrointestinal bleeding
โ Kidney or chronic inflammatory disease
โ Less commonly, bone marrow or blood disorders
๐ฃ Diagnosis & Management
โ A complete blood count (CBC) confirms low haemoglobin
โ Ferritin, vitamin B12, folate, kidney tests, or other investigations may help identify the cause
โ Treatment depends on the cause and may include iron, vitamin replacement, treatment of bleeding, or other specific therapy
โ Severe symptomatic anemia may occasionally require blood transfusion
๐ฃ Seek Urgent Medical Help If
โ Chest pain, fainting, or severe breathlessness occurs
โ There is vomiting of blood or black, tarry stool
โ Bleeding is heavy or ongoing
โ Weakness or dizziness becomes severe
