Part 2: Type 2 diabetes, autism, and ADHD: A connection science is beginning to understand
In recent years, different studies have begun to find a relationship between neurodevelopmental disorders – especially autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – and certain metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes.
This relationship is especially interesting because it forces us to look at these conditions from a broader perspective. The brain and metabolism do not work independently: they share pathways related to inflammation, insulin signaling, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and possibly certain genetic factors.

However, it is important to make a clarification: finding an association between two diseases does not mean that one is necessarily the cause of the other. Current studies point to a complex relationship in which metabolic, environmental, genetic and behavioural factors may be involved.
