Cacao and death have always walked hand in hand, in Ecuador and beyond. Far to the north, in the Mesoamerican world, the Maya wove the same thread into one of their most sacred stories.
The Popol Vuh tells of Hun Hunahpu and his brother Vucub Hunahpu, summoned to Xibalba, the underworld, by its lords One Death and Seven Death. There they were tricked and sacrificed, and Hun Hunahpu’s head was hung in a barren tree. At once its branches filled with fruit, and the head became one among them.
When Xquic, a young woman of the underworld, came near, the head spoke and let a drop of spittle fall into her palm. From that touch, life: the Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque. They would descend into Xibalba, outwit the lords of death, and the rebirth of their father, the Maize God, would be painted on Maya vessels for centuries, the very cups that once held Cacao.
Death as a seed. A seed as a doorway. A doorway as a return.
This is the quiet teaching of Cacao: nothing ends, everything transforms. 🤎
