for unmet medical needs and high-value biotechnological products

MEDINA is an independent and non profit Research Organization developing innovative programs, collaborations and contracts with academic and industrial partners worldwide. MEDINA owns one of the largest Microbial Collections and the most chemically diverse Natural Products Libraries

Our team has unique expertise in natural products microbiology, chemistry and high throughput screening, as well as in early preclinical safety, drug metabolism and bioanalysis. We are currently active in drug discovery programs in infectious diseases (including tuberculosis and parasitic diseases),cancer, neurodegeneration, and rare diseases. Leveraging our unique strengths in high resolution-high throughput analytics and bioanalytics we are collaborating with clinical investigators in translational research programs for biomarker discovery and metabolomic profiling of patient samples. We are currently active in drug and biomarker discovery programs in infectious and neglected diseases cancer, CNS, and rare diseases. MEDINA is a Research Organization established in the Health Sciences Technology Park, Granada (Spain) as a private-public partnership between the Government of Andalucía (Spain), the University of Granada and Merck Sharp and Dohme de España S.A.

One of the biggest challenges in natural products research is distinguishing truly novel chemistry from compounds that have already been described.

Without early characterisation, time and resources can be invested in isolating and characterising molecules that are already known.

At Fundación MEDINA, we assess novelty at an early stage and focus attention on the most promising chemistry.

On , we are excited to share our recently published study in Scientific Reports!
🔬 “Label-free morphometric profiling reveals early drug responses in 3D tumor spheroids”

In this work, we introduce m3DinAI Drug Quest, a high-content imaging platform that combines 3D tumor spheroids with label-free, longitudinal morphological profiling to characterize drug responses in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

💡 What makes our approach different?
Rather than relying exclusively on conventional cell viability assays, we analyze how tumor spheroids change their morphology over time in response to treatment.
Our study demonstrates that:
🔹 Label-free imaging can reveal early drug-induced morphological changes that conventional viability assays may miss.
🔹 The Morphological Disruption Concentration (MDC) provides a complementary metric for quantifying drug responses.
🔹 Multiparametric morphological profiling can distinguish treatment-specific phenotypes and different drug classes.

By combining physiologically relevant 3D cancer models with scalable phenotypic profiling, we aim to contribute to more informative preclinical drug discovery.

👏 this work was led by Dr. Rosario Fernández - Godino. Congratulations to Inmaculada Iáñez García, Dr. Marta Martínez García, and Dr. Carmen Ramos Martin for their contributions to this work!

Joining forces at the XVIII SDDN Meeting in Pamplona!

From 21-23 October, Fundación MEDINA will be at the XVIII Spanish Drug Discovery Network meeting, which bring together drug discovery professionals from academia and industry.

The program features a mix of science, mentoring, and networking opportunities for all, and we are taking part in all three!

Carmen Ramos Martin, and Marta Martínez García, Scientists at Fundación MEDINA, bring two projects: SMART-TNT, on new therapies for triple-negative breast cancer, and PROSPLIGN, on bioactive molecules from lignin for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and fragrance industries.

Rosario Fernández-Godino, Head of Screening and Target Validation Unit and and SDDN board member, will chair the session “Accelerate your future: Fast-track mentoring for early-career scientists” a unique opportunity to boost your career with insights from experts in drug discovery from different fields.

If you are in Pamplona, come and find us!
