Sleep and the neurodiverse brain.

Whether your child has autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, auditory processing difficulties or is simply a highly functioning, deeply sensitive little person whose brain never seems to switch off - sleep can feel like an impossible mountain to climb every single night 😔

And I want to start by saying this:

You are not doing anything wrong. Their brain is just wired differently. And that brain needs a different kind of support to find rest 🩷

Why do neurodiverse children struggle with sleep?

The simplest way I can explain it is this:

Think of your child’s nervous system like a car. From the moment they wake up in the morning their foot is on the gas pedal - go, go, go.

Their brain is processing everything around them at an intensity that most of us simply cannot imagine.

Every sound. Every texture. Every social interaction. Every instruction. Every transition from one thing to the next.

For a neurodiverse brain all of this takes enormous amounts of energy and processing power.
And unlike neurotypical children whose nervous systems naturally start to wind down as the day goes on - a neurodiverse brain can stay in overdrive right up until and often well beyond bedtime.

The foot never comes off the gas pedal.

And you cannot sleep when your brain is still driving at full speed.

I share some really helpful tips you can start to implement TODAY 😃

Every single sleep “regression” has the same story - a period of huge developmental growth where the brain is working incredibly hard to consolidate new skills during sleep.

Your baby is not going backwards. They are leaping forwards 🌟

What I always look at when a parent tells me their baby has hit a regression:

• What new skills are they learning right now?
• What has changed in their daytime behaviour?
• What are they suddenly interested in or attempting to do?

Nine times out of ten the answer to those questions tells me everything I need to know.

Keep a little diary

If sleep suddenly changes I always recommend keeping a simple diary for a few days - note down what is happening during the day, what new things your baby is attempting, what their mood is like. You will often start to see the connection between the daytime development and the night time disruption.

Hang in there, this phase will pass.

Every so called sleep regression is actually a period of incredible developmental growth.

Your baby or toddler is learning new skills and their brain is consolidating all of that learning at night time - which is why sleep gets a little funky for a while.

That is not regression. That is progress 🌟

The 4 month “regression”

At around 4 months your baby’s sleep cycle matures and changes quite significantly. They transition from awake to asleep via the lighter stages of NREM sleep - which lengthens the sleep cycle and makes it more complex.

Some babies find this transition harder than others and this is what gets labelled the 4 month sleep regression.

But look at everything else that is happening at this age:

• 🌟 Rolling
• 💛 Cooing and making deliberate attempts to vocalise and engage with you
• 🧠 Accurately getting their hand to their mouth
• 👀 Becoming highly distractible - suddenly fascinated by everything going on around them
• 🤤 Maturation of the salivary glands causing dribbling - which is why almost every parent thinks their baby is teething at 3 months!

This is not regression. This is a baby whose brain is absolutely firing.

Give lots of opportunities during the daytime to practice these new skills.

When sleep gets funky, keep a diary during the day, what new things are they doing?

This really will help.

When parents hear the word regression they start waiting for it to happen.

Dreading it.

And when sleep changes, as it naturally will at certain developmental stages, the panic sets in immediately.

“This is it. The regression has arrived.”

But here is what I want you to know. Some babies cruise straight through these stages and sleep is barely affected at all. And if you understand what is actually happening developmentally, what your baby’s brain is doing and why, it becomes so much less scary

So let’s talk about what is really going on.

It is not a regression. It is a milestone.

Every so called sleep regression is actually a period of incredible developmental growth.

Your baby or toddler is learning new skills and their brain is consolidating all of that learning at night time which is why sleep gets a little funky for a while.

That is not regression. That is progress 🌟

Observe your baby or toddler during the daytime, what new skills are they learning?

Gives lots of opportunities to practice these new skills during their wake time. It really does help 🤩

The first few weeks back at school or nursery are exciting, but they are also exhausting.
For our little ones especially.

And if you have noticed that your child comes home and completely falls apart - the meltdowns, the tears, the tantrums that seem to come from nowhere - I want you to know something really important first.

You are not doing anything wrong. You are actually doing everything right 🩷

I saw this on Instagram recently and thought it explained the after school meltdown perfectly:

“Think of it like a shaken soda bottle.

All day, pressure builds - managing classroom rules, navigating social dynamics, suppressing frustration.

Then the lid comes off and everything fizzes out.

The primary parent isn’t the cause of the pressure. They’re the release valve.”

Is that not just perfect? 🥹

Your child holds it together ALL day at school. They follow the rules, they manage their emotions, they navigate friendships and new environments and all of that takes an enormous amount of brain power and energy.

And then they see YOU. Their safe person. Their person. And the lid comes off.

It is not a reflection of your parenting. It is a reflection of how safe and loved they feel with you 🩷

Is your little one fighting naps at the moment?

Is bedtime getting later and later no matter what you try?

Are they seemingly exhausted but just cannot switch off when you need them to?

If you are nodding along right now I want to talk to you about something called sleep pressure - because understanding this one thing could genuinely change everything for you and your little one.

So what exactly is sleep pressure?

Sleep pressure is something that builds up naturally in your child’s brain from the moment they wake up in the morning.

A bit of sleep science 👇

As your little one is awake and going about their day a chemical called adenosine gradually builds up in the brain. The longer they are awake the more adenosine builds up and this build up is what eventually makes them feel sleepy enough to fall asleep and stay asleep.

This is why babies nap - to reduce the sleep pressure so they can carry on with the day and make it to bedtime.

If sleep pressure isn’t high enough before naps and bedtime we get nap resistance and bedtime battles.

Drop me a comment or DM if you’re struggling with this right now ###x

If you have been trying everything at naps and bedtime and it is still a battle every single time, it might be time to look at the bigger picture.

Not just the routine but the whole day, the whole child and what their individual sleep needs actually are.

That is exactly what I do 🌟

Sleep pressure is the most common topic I talk about with my clients.

Giving children 2 choices over EVERYTHING can be a game changer.

Why?

You are giving them the power and control their brains need. This is normal brain development.

This is why you find yourself having a full on argument with a 2 year old 🫣 they need the power.

Another little tip: after you give them the choice WAIT. It takes 7-10 seconds for children to register what we say.

Are you in the thick of tantrums at the moment?

What triggers your child?
