Not too long ago, a dear friend and client held out a bag to me and said, “I did something. Put your hand in and choose a stone.”
I pulled out one marked FEEL.
I was incredibly touched, and at the same time not surprised!
Learning to accept that one of my strengths is my capacity to feel has been one of my biggest processes over the last few years.
I have always felt a lot. Since I was very little, it has almost been as though I can see through feeling. And often, I still struggle to find words for what I can so clearly feel in my body.
This is also a part of what brought me to Nutrition Health Coaching and Functional Nutrition.
Through my own experience, I began to notice how differently I perceived the world depending on how I cared for and nourished my body.
The simpler and more nourishing my food, the clearer I felt. My heart felt more open. I felt more connected, to myself, my children, my dog, my garden, the world around me.
But feeling deeply also means vulnerability.
Sometimes it is overwhelming. Sometimes I don’t want to feel at all.
And we have so many ways of numbing ourselves that give the impression of fun, productive or necessary: food, alcohol, medications, distraction, constantly keeping busy…
For me, the journey is not about feeling less. It is about learning how to hold what I feel without needing to shut it down.
And strangely, the more I accept this part of myself, the more I recognise it as a strength rather than something I need to protect myself from.
So today, if you are a feeler too, I feel you.
I hope we can keep learning how to feel deeply, while also finding the grounding and safety to stay open and experience the strength that comes with deep feeling.
