Day 34 of What Healing Knows in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 Exploring the Jubilee Palace in Addis Ababa, Haile Selassie's former residence, now the National Palace Museum.

I was here as a child. Standing here as an adult, I felt generations of Ethiopian history beneath my feet, the crowns, the thrones, the stories held in these walls.

Healing is also about history: honoring what was built before us, and knowing what we get to carry forward.

What did those who came before you build that you're still standing on? Tell me below.

Follow for all 55 days of What Healing Knows in Ethiopia.

Inhale.
Inhale a little more.
Exhale slowly as you say, “Efoy.”

This is the physiological sigh, a breathing technique studied for rapid stress relief.

That second inhale helps reopen tiny air sacs in the lungs. The long exhale helps your body shift toward calm.

Save this. Because when stress takes over, you won’t want to search for what helps.

One difficult year does not define your life.

We can be so quick to let one hard chapter convince us that the whole story is going wrong.
Pause. Breathe. There is still more life ahead of you. More moments to choose differently, begin again, and become who you are becoming.
Give yourself room to keep going. 🤍

ያልዘሩት አይበቅልም።
Yalzerut aybeklim.
What you do not plant cannot grow.

Three years ago, I planted a Wanza (ዋንዛ) seedling at Zoma Museum in Addis Ababa.

Planting is an act of hope.
So is healing.

What we plant today becomes what we live beneath tomorrow.

A tree.
Peace.
Joy.
Healing.

What will you plant today that you want to see grow?

You can acknowledge what you wish you had done differently and still offer yourself compassion.

Self-forgiveness is not letting yourself off the hook. It is giving yourself the space to learn, grow, and begin again.

Yelugnta. ይሉኝታ.

“What will people say?”

Grateful to for inviting me to speak about the voices that shape us, the communities that hold us, and what we choose to carry forward.

What shaped us should not end with us.
Carry forward what serves us.
Let go of what holds us back.
Sometimes, that means letting go of ይሉኝታ.

Thank you for the warm welcome and beautiful sisterhood.

Demakese | ደማከሴ
If you grew up in Ethiopia, you probably know this plant.

At Zoma Museum my sister Meski and I talked about Demakese, a plant we grew up knowing as something you reached for when you weren’t feeling well.

But how much do we really know about the plants we grew up with?

Demakese (Ocimum lamiifolium) has a long history of traditional use in Ethiopia and continues to be studied for its medicinal properties.

Read more about Demakese and what the research shows at drkidi.com. Link in bio.
