Saunottaminen on paljolti käsityötä. Vihdat syntyvät oksa kerrallaan, kiukaan tulta hoidetaan, vettä valellaan iholle ja kädet hierovat saunojan kehoa.
Tämä taito kasvaa tekemällä ja tunnustelemalla. Oksan taipuisuuden, lehden pehmeyden ja kosketuksen sopivan voimakkuuden oppii vähitellen kokemuksesta. Samalla jatkuu perinne, joka on kulkenut käsistä käsiin.
Tutkimuksessakin käsitöiden ja taiteen tekeminen on yhdistetty onnellisuuteen ja merkityksellisyyden kokemukseen. Vihtaa sitoessa ajatus tuntuu läheiseltä: saan keskittyä siihen, mitä käsissäni on, ja tehdä jotain, jolla voin hoitaa toista.
Milloin viimeksi annoit käsillesi jotain muuta tunnusteltavaa kuin näytön?

Understanding through touch.
Much of a sauna practitioner’s work is done by hand. Whisks are made, the stove is tended, water is poured, and the body is massaged. Through practice, you get to know the plants, the stove, and the human body.
Each responds in its own way. A branch bends, fire responds to airflow, and a muscle responds to touch. Gradually, you learn when more strength is needed, when to soften, and when to give things time.
Research has linked arts and crafts with happiness and a sense that life is worthwhile. I recognise something familiar in this: working with my hands draws my attention to what is happening right now. Understanding grows through touch.
When did you last give your hands something other than a screen to explore?
