From Laura’s Handstand Workshop on Saturday ✨

Some people argue that handstands aren’t really yoga. I see the argument, I just don’t see it that way.

To me, the poses were always a means to an end. It isn’t what you do that makes it yoga, it’s the state of mind you do it in. That’s why yoga has absorbed so many movements from outside its tradition and still managed to survive and evolve. So as long as you’re in that place of focus and presence while you do it, I’d call it yoga 🧐🧠

But what a handstand really does, more than anything, is flip your whole perspective on its head. Maybe for the first time, you see things as they actually are. And you see yourself as you actually are, far more capable than you ever realised.

Do the Yoga Sutras teach us about life, or does life teach us about the Yoga Sutras? 🤔

In my early days, I often found myself forcing an understanding of philosophy and religion, because I thought I was meant to understand it. I didn’t really trust the process.

Then Zaccy was born, and I realised I’d been seeing life completely upside down 🙃. It changes everything you are, every fibre of your being. Years later, I picked up the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and saw everything through a completely different lens.

So I guess the question is, are we allowing life to teach us its greatest lessons? Or are we still looking for the answers in a book? 📕

Two planks become one in chaturanga, and it’s your core (your brace), that’s the missing link 🙄. Once you feel this and can switch it on at will, it changes not just that pose but how your body behaves in every other one too 👍🏽✨ - well, most of the time anyway 🫥😏

No brace, no base. Simple as that.

I’m not claiming I’ve woken up. Most days I’m as lost in the dream as anyone, and Zaccy can confirm that 😤. But the first stage isn’t waking up, it’s recognising we’re in a dream 🫣

When we’re awake, we’re still dreaming. We’re awake, but we’re absent . Our bodies are vacant whilst our heads are occupied 😨 And modern man has never been more in his head, or more lost in his dreams.

So Patanjali says, in a roundabout way, to use yoga to simple be. I know he wasn’t talking about the yoga we do today, but the principle is the same. Yoga gets us out of our heads and into the here and now.

Gotta go, Zaccy is calling me for the hundredth time...

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali lists the qualities that support the path: faith, energy, memory, absorption and insight 🧐

Faith, shraddha, comes first, and its roots suggest something closer to placing your heart into something over blind belief. It’s a trust in yourself, and helping someone find it is one of the greatest things a teacher can do. And faith can move mountains. And mountain pose, for most, is the best place to start 🫶🏽🙏🏾

The problem in side angle (the same problem in all poses I guess 😵‍💫) is chasing more and more depth.

Just think for a second, where else is there to go? 🤷🏾‍♂️

When a student has lower back pain in (and from) side angle pose, usually it’s the SI joint. Sink too low and the ball & socket of the hip runs out of space, so the pelvis and lower back pick up the slack and the SI joint takes the load 😭
Problem is, it’s a stabilising joint, not a load-bearing one.

The solution? 👉🏽 Lift out of that sinking feeling and put the work back into the legs.

It’s humbling because you have to do a bit less in order to do more 😏🙄🧐

Sometimes you have to bend the rules, or at least the knee. Enter Triangle from side angle, engage the quads, and straighten from there so your muscles are pulling their weight instead of leaving the knee joint to carry it 👊🏾

Someone once commented that they could get their foot behind their head. And I commented back that it’s easy when your head is already up your ass 😤🫣
He gave me one of my own fake laughs 🙄😏

What you feel in standing poses is mostly your brain 🧠 recruiting muscles so you don’t end up face first on the mat 😤. Sit down in seated poses, take that threat away, and the nervous system relaxes its grip, which is why seated poses are far better at actually stretching your muscles 👊🏾

That’s why I treat standing poses as exercises, not stretches. They build a stronger, steadier body that’s harder to break, and the work in your front leg in triangle teaches muscles to be strong at length, which is the kind of flexibility that is actually helpful for long term health. And i’m all about that - especially as I approach 50 🫥🤯

Calling triangle a hamstring stretch is a bit of a stretch 🔺 if you ask me. Then again, every triangle has three points, and I’ve made at least two 🧐

The older I get, the less I trust the stuff everyone tends to agree on. And that’s not me being difficult. It’s because “this is how it’s always been done” has injured more people than any advanced yoga pose ever has.

My mindset has always been to question everything that’s come before me, and especially to question the bits that have never been questioned. It’s not because I’m trying to rebel. It’s because I consider myself a teacher, and I just want what’s best for my students.
