Testosterone: what does it actually do, and why does it matter for men’s health? Testosterone is an important male hormone involved in much more than s*x drive. It plays a role in energy, mood, s*xual function, erections, muscle mass and strength, bone health, body composition and general wellbeing. Testosterone levels can gradually decline with age, but some men develop testosterone deficiency — also known as male hypogonadism or low testosterone — where reduced levels are associated with troublesome symptoms.
In this video, Alex Hoyle, Consultant Urologist, breaks down the facts about testosterone, including how testosterone changes as men get older and the symptoms that may suggest low testosterone. These can include reduced libido, erectile difficulties, fatigue, low mood, reduced motivation, loss of muscle mass and strength, increased body fat and reduced general wellbeing. Importantly, these symptoms are not specific to testosterone deficiency, so appropriate assessment and blood testing are essential before considering treatment. Understanding testosterone is an important part of understanding men’s health, s*xual health and healthy ageing.
