Supporting Physical Health & Daily Comfort
As bodies change, small adjustments make daily life easier and safer, and help maintain strength and mobility.
Key actions:
- Nutrition support: Older adults often lose appetite or struggle with cooking. Offer to help prepare simple, nutrient-rich meals (high in protein, fibre, and vitamins), or check they have easy access to fresh food. Watch for signs of weight loss or dehydration—thirst reduces with age.
- Encourage gentle movement: Short walks, stretching, or chair exercises help keep joints flexible and muscles strong. Even 5–10 minutes a day improves balance and lowers fall risk.
- Medication safety: Help organise pills into labelled boxes, check expiry dates, and remind them to take doses. Note any side effects and suggest speaking to a GP if issues arise.
- Home safety checks: Remove trip hazards (rugs, loose wires), add handrails by stairs/bathrooms, ensure good lighting, and keep everyday items within easy reach.
Quick tip:
Ask their GP or pharmacist for advice on age-friendly exercises or nutrition if you’re unsure.
