✨ self care ✨
One of the biggest shifts I have seen since returning from healthcare to holistic care, is the change in people’s approach to looking after themselves.
Massage used to be seen at a luxury and perhaps even, self indulgent when I was working as a young therapist in 2008. The impression I got was people held their “health” in the medical arena and anything that was “wrong” with them was addressed with a referral and/or medication.
Now, as a nurse please let me start by saying this: if you find a lump in your breast, go to your GP. If you fall off at a height and break a bone, go to A&E. If you feel like you are going to hurt yourself, call 999. If you crack a tooth, go to your dentist. If you feel there is something very wrong within your body and you are having new, notable symptoms, please see medical care to ensure there are no undiagnosed diseases or conditions at play.
I cannot emphasise enough the importance of early recognition when it comes to illness.
However, once you have ruled out serious conditions or disease and your bloods and investigations have come back as “fine” (but you don’t feel fine). Look at holistic health. More importantly, look after your health NOW to do the best you can to avoid becoming another patient on a wait list.
Regular massage can have as many health benefits as exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet.
🔸 it can prevent muscular strain from developing and spreading
🔸 it can aid in the treatment and recovery from muscular injury
🔸it can support your mental health by allowing you the time your mind needs to quieten and silently process
🔸it can change how you perceive your own health and what that really means to you - are you just ticking along, or are you thriving?
Massage, Reflexology and other therapies are self care, but they are also healthcare and I think more people are waking up to that and investing in their health now.
What a wonderful time to immerse myself in this place again ☺️
