Three days in Edinburgh. Practical workshops, conversations with people working across extreme medicine, and the chance to discover where your own interests could take you.

That’s WEM26, but a list of sessions only tells part of the story.

You might leave with a skill you’ve practised, a new way to approach a challenge, a clearer idea of your next career step, or a connection that continues long after the conference ends. And you can shape the weekend around what matters most to you, whether that’s expedition medicine, humanitarian response, rescue, offshore care, human performance or something you haven’t explored yet.

We’ve written a guide to what the World Extreme Medicine Conference is, who it’s for and what you can take away from it.

We’re looking for registered nurses and paramedics to join a small medical team supporting a television production on a remote South Pacific island.

You’ll provide direct clinical care for cast, crew and local staff, both in the on-location clinic and out on set. The work includes emergency assessment, stabilisation and trauma care within your professional scope of practice, alongside supporting medical evacuations where required.

This is a remote, resource-limited setting with no permanent hospital nearby. Strong clinical judgement, communication and teamwork will be essential.

We want applicants to have a clear picture of the role and its terms before they apply:

Pay: US$1,649 per week, paid in GBP equivalent, plus travel pay.

Contract: Four placements are currently available in 2027:
• 15 February - 9 July
• 15 March - 7 July
• 31 March - 5 July
• 17 April - 30 June

Please tell us which placements you’re available for. Longer-term availability will be prioritised, though shorter placements will still be considered.

On-call: Overnight and out-of-hours cover is required as part of the wider clinical rota. Demand may increase when the team is smaller or a colleague is away on a medical evacuation.

Living conditions: Basic, shared accommodation and facilities at the production’s base camp. Expect frequent boat transfers, sometimes in open water, and the possibility of accompanying international medical evacuations. Travel, accommodation and subsistence arrangements will be confirmed with successful candidates.

Insurance: WEM’s medical malpractice and professional indemnity insurance covers workers on this contract.

Applicants must be registered nurses or paramedics with at least two years’ post-qualification clinical experience and in-date ALS/ACLS certification. Please check the full listing for all essential requirements.

Contractual confidentiality means we cannot disclose the production name or exact location publicly. Further details will be shared with candidates progressing to interview once confidentiality undertakings are in place.

There’s a lot to be said for learning winter medicine with snow under your boots and a team beside you.

Next March, we’re heading to New Hampshire’s White Mountains for five days of practical training, bringing together healthcare professionals and students who want to feel more prepared to care for patients in the cold.

You’ll spend time outdoors working through scenarios with experienced clinicians and local wilderness instructors, putting the teaching into practice and talking through the decisions you make along the way.

We’ll cover hypothermia and cold injuries, trauma care, patient evacuation, avalanche awareness, and expedition planning. You’ll also work on the communication and teamwork that matter when conditions become difficult and help is some distance away.

You don’t need previous expedition experience to join us. An interest in wilderness medicine, a good level of fitness, and a willingness to get involved are a great starting point.

And when the day’s training is done, you’ll have a meal and a place to stay at Joe Dodge Lodge, with time to get to know the people you’ve been learning alongside.

Winter Medicine: March 8 to 12, 2027
White Mountains, New Hampshire
Up to 24 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ through the Wilderness Medical Society.

The course costs US$2,395, including accommodation and meals from the start of the course through lunch on the final day. You can book with a US$500 deposit, and interest-free monthly payment options are available.

Come and join us in the mountains:

What does it look like from inside a Gamow bag?

One of our attendees, Diogo Preto, recorded this clip while taking part in our recent Expedition & Wilderness Medicine course. The scenario: a person with high altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE), a serious form of altitude illness.

A Gamow bag is a portable hyperbaric chamber that can help buy time when descent is delayed. Getting inside one during training gives participants a perspective that’s difficult to get from a slide.

Altitude illness is one of many challenges explored on the course, alongside the practical decisions and equipment involved in caring for people in remote environments.

Thanks to Diogo for sharing his view from inside the bag and giving us permission to share the clip. Explore our Expedition & Wilderness Medicine courses: https://worldextrememedicine.com/product-category/extreme-medicine-courses/expedition-wilderness-medicine/

Some people respond to disasters and humanitarian emergencies while continuing in their usual civilian jobs or training. How do they make the decision to deploy, and what gets in the way?

A research team at Northeastern University is inviting clinicians, allied health professionals and trained non-clinical volunteers with this kind of experience to take part in an anonymous survey.

It asks about past deployments, motivations, barriers and employer policies on humanitarian and disaster response leave. The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Taking part is voluntary, and you can skip questions or stop at any time.

If this applies to you, you can read the participant information and take part here: https://qualtricsxmp7zmkdw8c.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cJjucpBthqInDiC

Please share it with others whose experience may be relevant.

Feedback from WEMFund’s latest training mission in Lviv.

In this reel, one participant reflects on the practical skills developed during tactical medicine training, including how to respond in dangerous situations and provide first aid:

“What I liked most was that there was a practical part where we could try everything for ourselves. I am confident these skills will be useful in real life.”

Practical training grounded in real situations is central to WEMFund’s work in Ukraine. It is also the foundation of our Prolonged Field Care Course, taking place at Muncaster Castle, Cumbria, from 28 September to 2 October.

Built from more than four years of WEMFund deployments and trauma training in active conflict zones, this five-day residential course explores the medical, logistical and human challenges of caring for critically injured casualties when evacuation is delayed.

Participants will work through field-based scenarios focused on sustained assessment, clinical decision-making, teamwork and adaptability when resources are limited and care must continue for hours or days.

All profits from the course directly support WEMFund’s humanitarian medical work, including training, trauma support and the delivery of medical equipment in Ukraine.

We’re incredibly excited to share that WEM founder Mark Hannaford will be speaking at The Explorers Club GLEX Ignition in this October.

His session, “Extreme Medicine on the Nabataean Traverse”, will introduce an extraordinary expedition following the ancient incense-trade corridor from Jordan to Saudi Arabia.

Beginning at the Dana Biosphere Reserve, the team will travel approximately 650 kilometres on foot and by camel through Petra and Wadi Rum before reaching Hegra and AlUla. The journey is expected to take around 40 days and will connect three UNESCO World Heritage sites across two countries.

But the expedition is about far more than completing the route.

The Nabataean Traverse will act as a moving scientific platform, exploring how humans adapt to sustained desert travel, how life persists at the biological limits of heat and drought, and what remote desert operations can teach us about future planetary exploration.

Research will span human physiology, heat adaptation, hydration, microbiology, desert ecology, heritage science, remote sensing and space analogue operations, alongside live educational engagement with students.

Mark will explore the role of extreme medicine in making this work possible and how the experience, knowledge and networks developed through World Extreme Medicine can support research at the edge of what is possible.

Where: GLEX Ignition, Coimbra, Portugal
When: 29 October 2026
Time of session: 14:20pm - 14:40pm
The Explorers Club - Great Britain and Ireland Chapter

Living conditions: Basic, shared accommodation and facilities at the production’s base camp. Travel, accommodation and subsistence arrangements will be confirmed with the successful candidate.

Insurance: WEM’s medical malpractice and professional indemnity insurance covers workers on this contract.

We’re seeking a registered doctor, paramedic or nurse with at least three years’ post-qualification clinical experience, an Advanced Life Support qualification, and experience managing teams, rotas and medical supplies. The full essential criteria are in the job post.

We cannot disclose the exact location or production name at the advertising stage because of our contractual confidentiality requirements. Candidates progressing to interview will receive further details once confidentiality undertakings are in place.
