Are you fuelling your body enough for the sport you love? This clip today highlights that men suffer from REDS just as much as females.

What is REDS? It is Reduced Energy Deficiency in Sports. REDS leaves athletes vulnerable to a myriad of injuries.

When watching this clip you might think it is an elite sporting injury, but I think we should recognise REDS doesn't just affect elite endurance athletes. It can affect many sportsmen and sportswomen involved in many sports i.e. amateur sports, recreational sports, dancing, weightlifting, football, and across all ages including adults, adolescents and children.

Early recognition is key-look out for repeated tiredness, repeated injury, poor recovery, changes in menstrual function, and a sudden unexplained decline in performance.

My best advice is to focus on adequate nutrition, adequate recovery and observe your body's warning signs.

I have had a few of these in recently, and thought I would post about it:

‘Frozen shoulder’, is this more than just a shoulder problem?

We know that ‘frozen shoulder’ affects around 2–5% of the population, but the surprising part of the statistic is that women make up approximately 58–67% of cases!

We already know it has important associations with diabetes and thyroid disease.

Now, emerging research is also exploring a possible link with menopause and falling oestrogen levels, particularly because frozen shoulder is most common in women during midlife.

The evidence is still developing, so we can’t say menopause causes frozen shoulder, but it’s another reminder that shoulder pain doesn’t always exist in isolation. Sometimes it’s worth looking at the wider health picture!

Who would have thought we’d get a day like this in late September?!

Today’s unusually warm sunshine was a lovely reminder to enjoy the daylight while we still can. As the days begin to get shorter, getting outside in natural light can support mood, sleep and overall wellbeing — and sunshine also helps the body produce vitamin D, which is important for healthy bones and muscles.

Daylight is one of the signals that helps regulate our body clock and sleep–wake cycle. This matters because sleep and pain are closely linked. Research shows that poor or disrupted sleep can increase pain sensitivity, while chronic musculoskeletal pain can in turn disturb sleep.

A little sunshine and fresh air can do the body good.

Sprained your ankle? Early loading matters!

Recent research continues to support an active approach to lateral ankle sprains rather than prolonged rest.

The key message is simple:

Protect the ankle — but don't avoid using it.

So don't wait until the ankle “feels better”. Your aim should be to progressively restore the ankles ability to tolerate load, and remember every injury is different, so the amount and timing of loading should be guided by the severity of the injury and your symptoms. A qualified Chartered Physotherapist will give you the advice you need to return to normal function as quickly as possible.

On World Mental Health Day 2025 it is important to remember the ‘Mind-Body’ dynamic. The positive relationship physical exercise can have on our physical and mental well-being is well researched. Movement is medicine 🧘🏼🏋️‍♂️🏃‍♀️🚴🏻‍♀️🏊‍♂️
