Step-by-Step Guide to Positioning and Attachment at the Breast
Correct positioning and attachment are essential for successful breastfeeding. They help the baby receive enough breast milk, promote effective milk transfer, and prevent ni**le pain and damage.
Step 1: Prepare for Breastfeeding
Wash your hands before feeding.
Sit or lie in a comfortable, supported position.
Keep your shoulders and arms relaxed.
Use pillows to support your back or arms if needed.
Hold your baby close to your body.
Step 2: Position the Baby Correctly
Remember the CHINS principles of positioning:
C – Close: Keep your baby close to your body.
H – Head free: Support the baby's neck and shoulders, allowing the head to tilt backwards slightly.
I – In line: Keep the baby's head, neck, and body in a straight line.
N – Nose to ni**le: Position the baby's nose opposite your ni**le.
S – Sustained: Support the baby's whole body throughout the feed.
The baby's tummy should face your tummy, with their head free to move.
Step 3: Encourage the Baby to Open Their Mouth
Position your ni**le level with the baby's nose.
Gently brush your ni**le against the baby's upper lip.
Wait for the baby to open their mouth widely, like a yawn.
Allow the baby's head to tilt slightly backwards.
Important: Do not push the baby's head towards the breast.
Step 4: Help the Baby Attach to the Breast
When the baby's mouth opens wide, bring the baby quickly and gently towards the breast.
Aim the ni**le towards the roof of the baby's mouth.
Allow the baby's chin to touch the breast first.
The baby should take a large mouthful of breast tissue, not just the ni**le.
The baby's lower jaw should be positioned well below the ni**le.
This helps the baby achieve a deep attachment (latch).
