❄️💙 MENOPAUSE LEAVING YOU FEELING HOT, TIRED AND NOT QUITE YOURSELF? LET’S TALK CRYOSAUNA! 💙❄️
Hot flushes, restless nights, aching joints, brain fog and feeling completely drained… menopause can bring a whole host of symptoms that affect how you feel, sleep and get on with everyday life.
And while we can't turn back the clock or make menopause disappear, there are ways to support your wellbeing through the journey. 🌸
Could Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) be one of them?

🧊 WHAT IS WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?
Our Cryosauna exposes the body to very cold air for a short, controlled period. It's an increasingly popular wellness treatment, and some women explore it as part of their self-care routine during perimenopause and menopause. Davinia Taylor is a massive advocate for the benefits of cold exposure.
Here's why it may be worth learning more about!

💙 1. ACHING JOINTS AND MUSCLES
Joint and muscle discomfort can become a real frustration during menopause. Targeted cold treatments can help to ease pain and WBC has a role in managing muscle soreness, inflammation and discomfort.
💙 2. FEELING TIRED AND RUN DOWN
When sleep is disrupted and energy levels dip, even everyday tasks can feel exhausting, cryotherapy can make you feel refreshed and invigorated afterwords. Some studies suggest whole-body cryotherapy can reduce cortisol levels and improve sleep quality by up to 40–50%
💙 3. MOOD AND MENTAL WELLBEING
Menopause can affect mood, motivation and emotional wellbeing. Cryotherapy triggers the release of endorphins and other feel good chemicals, giving a boost clarity and energy.
💙 4. YOUR WELLNESS ROUTINE
Menopause is a time when looking after yourself matters more than ever. WBC can be a beneficial addition to a wider self-care routine alongside regular movement, good nutrition, restorative sleep and time for yourself.
🌸 BUT WHAT ABOUT HOT FLUSHES AND NIGHT SWEATS?
Low estrogen levels during menopause cause the brain's internal thermostat (the hypothalamus) to misread minor changes as overheating; cold exposure can help regulate and calm this response.
❄️ MENOPAUSE ISN'T SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO NAVIGATE ALONE.
At our Barnsley clinic, we're here to answer your questions and help you decide whether Whole Body Cryotherapy could be a suitable addition to your wellbeing routine.
You don't need to be an athlete or a fitness fanatic. Sometimes, making time for yourself is a great place to start. 💙
📩 Curious about our Cryosauna? Send us a message to find out more or enquire about booking your first session.
Because looking after yourself isn't a luxury — it's important at every stage of life. 🌸❄️

❄️HOW DOES CRYOTHERAPY WORK? THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE COLD! ❄️
Ever wondered what actually happens inside your body when we apply targeted cryotherapy to an injured or painful area?
It’s more than simply making the skin cold! Let's take a closer look at how cooling affects the tissues and why it can be useful as part of an injury recovery plan. 👇

1. THE COOLING PROCESS BEGINS
When cold is applied to an area, heat is transferred away from the skin and the underlying tissues. The amount of cooling that occurs depends on the device used, the temperature, the duration of treatment and the depth of the tissue.
This drop in temperature triggers several physiological responses within the treated area.
2. BLOOD VESSELS RESPOND
Cooling causes local blood vessels to narrow temporarily — a process known as vasoconstriction.
This can reduce local blood flow during treatment and may help limit bleeding and fluid accumulation in the early stages of an acute injury.
The aim isn't to stop circulation altogether. It's to manage symptoms safely while the body continues its natural recovery processes.
3. PAIN SIGNALS CAN SLOW DOWN
One of the best-understood effects of cryotherapy is its impact on pain.
As tissue temperature falls, sensory nerve conduction can slow down, meaning pain signals travel more slowly. Cold also influences the way the nervous system processes pain.
The result? Temporary pain relief and reduced discomfort for some people.
This can be particularly useful when soreness or pain is making everyday movement more difficult.
4. WHAT ABOUT INFLAMMATION AND SWELLING?
Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury. It helps initiate the repair process, but excessive swelling and discomfort can also be troublesome.
Cooling may reduce tissue fluid leakage and help manage swelling, particularly shortly after an acute injury.
However, inflammation isn't always the enemy! The body needs a carefully regulated inflammatory response to repair damaged tissue. The goal is to manage symptoms, not eliminate the body's natural healing response.

❄️ HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO OUR TREATMENTS?
At our Barnsley clinic, we offer two different approaches:
LOCALISED CRYOTHERAPY
This targets a specific area of the body. It's an option for people looking to manage discomfort in a particular muscle or joint and support their recovery routine.
WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY (WBC)
Our Cryosauna exposes the body to very cold air for a short, controlled period. Whole-body cryotherapy is used by some people as part of their recovery and wellbeing routines, although its effects are not the same as targeted treatment, and evidence for injury healing remains limited.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Cryotherapy isn't magic, and no single treatment is right for every injury. But understanding how cold affects the body helps explain why it has a place in pain management and recovery.
Whether you're dealing with a sporting niggle, muscle soreness or simply want to learn more about our treatments, we're happy to talk you through your options.

🔥❄️ HEAT OR ICE? WHICH ONE DOES YOUR INJURY NEED?❄️🔥

It’s one of the most common questions we hear… Should I use heat or ice on my injury?

The answer depends on what’s causing the problem, how recently it happened, and what you’re trying to achieve. Getting it right can make a real difference to your comfort and recovery! 💙

❄️ WHEN TO USE ICE

Cold therapy is often useful for recent injuries, particularly when there’s pain and swelling.

Think:
🏃 Sprains and strains
⚽ Sports injuries and knocks
🤕 Acute muscle injuries
🦵 Painful, swollen joints after an injury

The benefits of cold:
✔️ Helps temporarily reduce pain
✔️ Can help limit swelling in the early stages
✔️ May help settle discomfort after activity

Apply a cold pack wrapped in a towel for around 10–20 minutes. Never put ice directly onto your skin.

🔥 WHEN TO USE HEAT

Heat is generally better suited to muscular tightness, stiffness and longer-standing aches where significant swelling isn't present.

The benefits of heat:
✔️ Encourages blood flow to the area
✔️ Helps muscles relax
✔️ Can ease stiffness and improve comfort
✔️ May make movement feel easier

Use gentle warmth for around 15–20 minutes, taking care not to burn your skin.

⚠️ WHAT SHOULD YOU AVOID?

Avoid applying heat to a newly injured, hot or swollen area, as it may worsen swelling. Equally, cold isn't suitable for everyone, particularly those with reduced sensation or circulation.

❄️ AND WHAT ABOUT CRYOTHERAPY?

Cold packs and professional cryotherapy aren't the same thing!

Our LOCALised CRYOTHERAPY uses targeted cold treatment for specific areas, while our WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPYoffers a different approach to recovery and wellbeing using our Cryosauna.

Both options may help with aspects of recovery and muscle soreness, but neither is a substitute for appropriate medical assessment or rehabilitation.

💙 NOT SURE WHICH OPTION IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

We're always happy to chat about our treatments and help you understand your options.

🎉 9 YEARS IN BUSINESS! 🎉

Last week, we quietly reached 9 years in business. Initially, I didn’t think it was anything to celebrate. But the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve realised… actually, it really is! 🥂

When we first opened our doors, barely anyone in the area had even heard of cryotherapy. It was something completely new to most people, and explaining what we did was often half the battle!

Fast forward 9 years and, although cryotherapy is still relatively uncommon, so many more people are now aware of the potential benefits, from supporting recovery and managing inflammation to helping the body recover following injuries and operations.

And then there’s Whole Body Cryotherapy. So many people are surprised by the range of ways it can fit into their wellbeing routine, from recovery and reduced muscle soreness to feeling more energised, refreshed and mentally clear. There are benefits that people often don’t expect when they first step into the Cryosauna.

One thing I can say with absolute certainty is that the vast majority of people who experience cryotherapy love it. And our returning customers are testament to that. Some people first came to us 9 years ago, and when another injury, niggle or period of intense training comes along… they come back. ❤️

We’ve been through COVID. We’ve marched on through the cost-of-living crisis. We’ve watched other small businesses sadly close their doors.

We’ve tried things that worked, and things that definitely didn’t! 😂 We’ve experienced highs and lows, and along the way we’ve had the privilege of seeing some incredibly talented sportspeople from Barnsley and beyond use our services.

But perhaps what makes me most proud is that we’ve remained here for everyone….

Young and old.
Fitness professionals and complete amateurs.
People who love sport and people who would much rather enjoy a leisurely walk in the park. 🚶‍♀️

We’ve deliberately kept our prices as low as we can, absorbing many of the ever-increasing costs ourselves, because we’ve always wanted to stick to our original ethos:

Accessible, top-rated recovery and wellbeing modalities for all.

Because, after all… if it’s good enough for Premiership footballers, it’s good enough for the folk of Barnsley! ⚽❄️

So yes… 9 years IS worth celebrating.
Thank you to every single person who has walked through our doors, recommended us to a friend, returned to us when they needed us, supported our little business, or simply followed along with what we do.

Without you, there wouldn’t be a 9th anniversary to celebrate.

🥂 Here’s to 9 years and, hopefully, another 9!

Thank you, Barnsley. ❤️❄️

❄️ Cryotherapy Help for Gout & Psoriatic Arthritis❄️

Conditions such as gout, and psoriatic arthritis can cause episodes of pain, inflammation, stiffness and swelling.

Cryotherapy , targeted cold therapy, can help to ease the symptoms by temporarily reducing pain, swelling and inflammation in the treated area.

🧊 How can targeted cryotherapy help?

A controlled application of cold to the affected area can:

❄️ Help reduce local inflammation and swelling
❄️ Temporarily numb pain and discomfort
❄️ Help calm irritated tissues
❄️ Make movement more comfortable
❄️ Provide a refreshing, drug-free option for symptom management

For conditions such as gout, where a joint can become suddenly hot, swollen and extremely painful, cryotherapy can provide relief during a flare-up and help to flush out the build up of uric acid.

For psoriatic arthritis, targeted cryotherapy can help ease discomfort and stiffness in affected areas, alongside your existing medical treatment.

💙 At Cryotherapy Barnsley, we tailor treatments to the individual and the area being treated.

If you're struggling with painful, swollen or stiff joints, get in touch to discuss whether localised cryotherapy could be suitable for you.
