In the first few years, Ebony Squid Studio didn’t have any reviews available. To be honest, we were TERRIFIED of opening ourselves up to vitriol and harsh words. Being a completely neurodivergent/disabled/queer person run business, we try to match the energy of our clients but our level of rejection sensitivity is INSANE 😰🤢

But in spring 2022, we made a Google business page and switched reviews to ON. 🫣

3 and a bit years later, we now have over 100 five star reviews! (112 to be exact) 🥰💫

THANK YOU to everyone who has taken the time to write one of these for us, (or simply just put ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) because it really means the world honestly. No one owes us a good review, and the odd 1 star has cropped up every now and again of course (because although we want to, we can’t please everyone 100% of the time) 🥲 thanks to everyone who downvoted or reported those btw 💛 they were cleaned up by Google eventually! We’re grateful for every single one, including those de 1 star reviews - we were able to respond to them and clear up any confusion!

Ebony Squid is (and has been for a while) a 5 star studio which feels pretty amazing. We are SO GLAD the good stuff we’re trying to put out is not only hitting the target, but coming back around again (and again and again!) 🎯🌀🧿♾️

We won’t ever stop trying to be better! We want to make those reviews count and reflect our business every single day 💯

FREE PLANT?! Honestly please help yourself! One of our studio neighbours Kinga gifted us some last year, and they are kicking OFF!
If you email ahead of your appointment we can get one ready! It if you don’t have an appointment and just want a free plant baby, email us and we can sort it out for studio collection!
Spider plants are GREAT air purifiers, and have thick juicy tube roots that hold water so they can survive lots of neglect! They thrive on it actually.
The main cause of death for houseplants around the world is OVERWATERING! You’d be surprised what they can handle 💚
We’re next in the studio this Tuesday 🌱

This summer marked Ebony Squid Studio’s 6th birthday! 🦑 but didn’t we just say 7 years of Ebony Squid?! Also our current studio only turned 2 earlier this year… So how does all that work then?!
You see, 7 years ago today is when it all started…
We love telling clients our story in the studio, but we’ve never published the full history before. We’ve now mapped out the full ‘squidstory’ and can’t wait to share it with you!

Change and transformation are two of the most natural processes in the universe…
🪏🫘🌱🌿🌳🌸🍎🐛🦋🍃🍂🪾⛄️🪵🔥🌧️🪱
Thank you to every single person who has been part of this story. Every mark made has been part of the painting that we can see in all its glory now (and it’s not even finished yet!)
It’s been a HUGE adventure so far. This is just part 1 of our story… Keep an eye out for part 2!
Follow along with us for more! 💚

December 2022: Lala was able to reconnect with and say goodbye to her mother in an unexpectedly tragic and healing set of circumstances. La & her sister were able to be with her together in her final few days. She passed away peacefully in the early hours with La & Kris by her side. 🕊️🤍

Lala’s chronic illness symptoms flare and she barely leaves the house.

La begins to integrate these new experiences, trauma, and grief into her mind (with the help of her family, friends, and her therapist) and begins to heal.

January 2023: Less than a week after La’s mother’s funeral, our studio is broken into and almost robbed! Luckily, nothing was stolen and we were back to business as usual the next day. 😌

April 2023: Ebony Squid Studio 3.0 turned one year old! It was such an exciting achievement; the longest lasting premises that Ebony Squid has been in to date. The 1st and 2nd places were both less than 1 year. However, we had our minds set on a bigger and better “endgame” premises for the long term life of our business.

July 2023: after months of careful planning and intention, we found the PERFECT place we could settle into. It used to be a tattoo shop, so it was a lovely way of continuing was a lovely way of continuing what it was before…

August 2023: WE GOT MARRIED!
Knowing what a huge task lay ahead of us, we wanted the ceremony small and sweet. It was perfect for our neurospicy brains to handle! We had 2 mini moons afterwards, one straight after the wedding in the summer and another in the autumn.

The wedding was short, sweet, and silly! There was a fairground in Cardiff Bay that day, and hardly anyone was there - it felt like we'd hired the whole place for the wedding! It was the perfect amount of fun without being too overwhelming.

September 2023: Lala & Kris officially became Mr. & Mrs. Coles and signed the contract for Ebony Squid Studio 4.0! (Athena) came along and we got chips at the beach afterwards! Our new landlord is wonderful, and even the estate agent shed a tear because she was so relieved to see the place go to lovely new owners!

September 2023: returning from their wedding and minimoon the month before, Lala & Kris get to work on Ebony Squid Studio 4.0 - whilst running business as usual at back at Ebony Squid Studio 3.0!

We were still in contract with our current studio (the purple place) and we loved working there still. So used the opportunity to carefully break down and build up both studios at the same time. It meant we were fully able to say goodbye and pay respects to the purple place, and say a great big HELLO to the new place!

Bigger place meant bigger plans!
Everything was created and built with intention, patience and care. The older parts were repaired and made new.
Juggling 2 studio rents, building costs, and tattooing full time was really tough, but we made it! 2024 & 2025 were just dreamy. Lots of financial strain, debt, and overwhelm, but so much happiness throughout.

February 2024: the new place is officially open! We managed to restore the old place back to how we found it with our kitchen and security shutters left installed. Our previous landlord said we were the most professional people she's ever done business with 🥲 and we got our whole deposit back!

May 2024: Our apprentice Athena becomes our junior artist, then a fully fledged tattoo artist 12 months later!

Our bigger studio was able to host guest artists for the first time ever, and Lala is able to host sober board game evenings and "RADMIN" days!

Kris & Lala start a range of handmade wares and gifts! La sells homegrown plants from the studio, and Kris launches Tales & Fables Engraving 💚 they both try out their first craft market in winter 2025, and love it so much they make them a regular thing!

It still doesn't feel real coming to work here each morning - like, WE ACTUALLY DID IT and are still doing it?! 😍🥰 being a fully accessible studio has been a massive dream come true and we love being able to accommodate as many people as possible. Every body is welcome here ♿️💙

Spring/Summer 2026: the heatwaves and weather warnings kept on coming, and we managed to keep to our appointments during the hottest months ever on record.
So what's next? Even more of the good stuff! More craft markets, more conventions, more tattoos and wonderful clients! More boardgame nights and D&D campaigns. Most importantly, MORE PLANTS.

Team Squid x

Do you ever feel like a collapsed bear plushie outside a tattoo shop? 🥀
Because that’s exactly how we feel right now 🫠 BUT we made it through one of our busiest weeks! 🧡 YAYYYYYY
We are so very “happy tired” (unlike this poor bear) and so grateful to all our clients for keeping us busy (and doing impressions on the pavement outside work)
No idea where this bear came from btw, and it’s been here for a few days now…
Kris didn’t join in with the bear impression, the bear made him feel too sad and he carefully moved it away so he didn’t see it every time we left the studio! 🥺❤️

We love telling clients our story in the studio, but we’ve never published the full history before. We’ve now mapped out the full ‘squidstory’ and can’t wait to share it with you!
2019: Ebony Squid Studio began life as a brand name for merchandise, “Ebony Squid”, created by Lala.
2020: “Ebony Squid” then became “Ebony Squid Club” - Lala’s art subscription service in lockdown.
Summer 2020: Lala built her second private studio to better cope with the new COVID-19 regulations and social distancing etc. She named it “Ebony Squid Studio”, to honour her Ebony Squid Club subscribers that helped support her whilst she built this studio, mostly by herself.
Autumn 2020: La celebrates 3 years sobriety and (shows it off) in her lovely new studio and plant shop! 🪴
Winter 2020: La meets up with a newly diagnosed Autistic, sober curious tattoo artist, Chris Morris - who would later become her sober partner in peace, her husband, and Coles - the co-owner of Ebony Squid Studio!
April 2021: Ebony Squid Studio 1.0 was going great, but the potential was maxed out and there wasn’t any room left for growth. Lala is offered a place somewhere that was the perfect next step on the journey! Kris helps La apply for her first business loan to get her set up in the larger premises.
July 2021: Kris joins Team Squid! They both take a road trip to Scotland to be guest artists at Semper Edinburgh together (then a cheeky mini holiday in the Lake District on the way home). Lala then feels comfortable enough to tattoo alongside someone full time again (after nearly 3 years of working solo in her own private studios).
January 2022: New Year’s Eve, while they were looking out at the hundreds of fireworks going off at midnight all over Cardiff and drinking Nosecco (in water bottles haha) standing at the top of Penarth together: Kris proposed to Lala! She said yeah (eventually, after a brief period of shock) and happy cried, a lot 💛✨It’s a custom-made faceted Opal, diamond and white gold engagement ring - Kris created it based on La’s love of Opals and her 2 year silver/crystal sobriety ring that she wears on her other ring finger 💍 it went perfectly with the yellow lightning bolt emoji she got tattooed on her ring finger in 2012 ⚡️to signify back then that La was SO OVER marriage and was married to electric tattooing forever! 🙄😜
February 2022: Kris and La properly move in together! From a tiny 1 bed flat (less than the size of a shipping container) to a 3 bedroom maisonette flat! From the town centre to a much quieter area of Penarth 🍃🌳 the same place that they’ve both been living in for over 4 years now. 🏡 all while planning the next major step for Ebony Squid Studio…
May 2022: whilst settling into their new home together, Lala & Kris were working on ANOTHER new studio! 😵 This one being much closer to their vision and ideas that they were wanting to achieve. It was street level and a lot more accessible for our limited mobility clients.
1st June: Athena officially joins Team Squid as our apprentice! 6 years before, Kris started tattooing Athena and over time, she and her husband Gwyn became good friends. Turns out that Lala and Athena actually went to art school together back in 2007! Athena has always been transparent about wanting to tattoo one day, and we were now in the position to offer the opportunity to her.
August 2022: we took Ebony Squid to the road and set up a double stall at our first convention: Comic Con 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤️ we sold art prints and talked tattoos... La talked to so many people that weekend, that she lost her voice for almost a week afterwards!
This is part 1 of our story… Keep an eye out for part 2!
