Pain Awareness Month | Week 4: Advance
As clinicians, we believe that advancing our understanding of pain is essential to improving the support we provide to children, young people, and their families.
Pain is complex and deeply individual. Supporting someone to live well with pain means considering their experiences, communication needs, developmental stage, neurodiversity, relationships, and life transitions alongside symptoms.
At BCPS, we are proud to be contributing to and learning from important conversations about pain across several international conferences this year. Sharing knowledge, exploring different perspectives, and listening to lived experiences helps us continue developing compassionate, inclusive, and psychologically informed approaches to care.
Jennifer Ford Consultant Physiotherapist and BCPS therapy lead will be presenting at EUPPT 2026:

Treating Chronic Pain Differently: Neurodiversity, Life Transitions & Psychologically Informed Physiotherapy
At PReS last week, Dr Jeremy Gauntlett-Gilbert, Consultant Clinical Psychologist at BCPS, helped facilitate valuable discussions on neurodiversity, pain, and rheumatology. The sessions highlighted the need to look beyond diagnosis alone and consider each child's unique experiences, perspectives, and needs when communicating, assessing symptoms, and planning care. Ultimately, they served as an important reminder that no two healthcare journeys are the same.
These discussions offer valuable opportunities to reflect on how we can continue improving support for children and young people living with pain and their families.
