Want to improve your relationship with food? Start by changing the way you THINK about it. ❤️
Food should not be something that fills your day with guilt, anxiety, rules and constant negotiations.
It is so much more than calories, numbers and nutrients.
If you're working towards a healthier relationship with food, here are some places to start:
🥑 1. Eat consistently.
Try to establish regular meals and snacks. Skipping meals, restricting or leaving yourself overly hungry can make it harder to recognise and respond to your body's needs. You deserve to eat regularly, regardless of what you've eaten previously.
❤️ 2. Drop the moral judgement.
Food is not good or bad. You are not good or bad based on what you eat. Eating chocolate doesn't make you naughty, and eating a salad doesn't make you virtuous. Let's take morality out of food choices.
🍓 3. Think nourishment AND enjoyment.
Nutrition matters, but so do pleasure, satisfaction, culture, connection and memories. Food can nourish your body AND bring you joy. Both are important.
🧠 4. Challenge the food rules.
Do you have foods you avoid because you've labelled them unhealthy? Do you feel you need to earn certain foods or compensate after eating them? Start questioning where these rules came from and whether they're actually helping you.
👂 5. Reconnect with your body.
Begin noticing hunger, fullness, appetite and satisfaction. These are valuable signals, although they can take time to reconnect with, particularly after years of dieting or restriction.
🌸 6. Practise self-compassion.
There will be days when eating feels easier and days when it feels harder. Try to replace criticism with curiosity. You don't need to punish yourself, start again on Monday or make up for yesterday.
⚖️ 7. Let go of perfection.
You don't need to eat perfectly to look after your health. Consistency, flexibility and variety matter far more than getting every food choice right.
