Today, on International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the incredible contribution of women at the heart of our rural communities across Northern Ireland.
Rural women play a vital role in bringing communities together, supporting one another and creating opportunities for people to connect, participate and thrive.
With 36% of Northern Irelandβs population living in rural areas, itβs important that rural womenβs voices, experiences and rights are recognised in decisions that shape their communities.
But not every woman has the same opportunities to participate. In Northern Ireland, almost one in four women (24%) report having a disability, while 17.9% of adults experience loneliness at least some of the time.
For disabled women living in rural areas, inaccessible transport and difficulties accessing services and activities can create additional barriers to social connection and community participation.
Accessible community transport can make a real difference.
Whether itβs meeting friends, attending a local group, taking part in activities or accessing employment and education, being able to get out and about supports independence, friendship and a sense of belonging. Every woman should have the opportunity to be an active and valued part of her community, regardless of disability or where she lives. Womenβs rights and disability rights are closely connected. By listening to rural women, including disabled women, and involving them in shaping local services, we can help create stronger, more connected and inclusive communities.
Weβre delighted to recognise the work of Northern Ireland Rural Women's Network in championing rural womenβs voices and promoting a society where women are visible, influential and valued. Together, we can challenge isolation, celebrate the contribution of rural women and ensure that no woman is left behind.
