Have you seen this art installation while passing through the Atrium in the Mater Hospital?

'Solis' is a light installation comprised of 20 large scale illuminated art pieces which were designed by 19 different departments and wards of the Mater Hospital. The project was co-designed and facilitated by the hugely talented Arts Care Artist Beth McComish.

These art pieces are now a permanent fixture in the Atrium, spanning almost the entire length of the wall and filling it with colour and light. Each piece carries its own unique message and artwork.

Whether you're a staff member, patient or simply passing through, take a moment to pause and admire this wonderful work of art and the creativity and imagination behind it.

Welcome to our Artist Showcase Series!

We are so excited to celebrate our wonderful team of artists and shine a spotlight on the amazing work they've been doing recently.

Charmaine McMeekin is a Dancer in Residence in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and has recently delivered dance sessions in the Stroke Unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital, working alongside the Occupational Therapy team in both group and 1-1 settings.

Charmaine brings a fantastic energy to the stroke unit, taking time to listen to participants and using their favourite music to encourage engagement and create beautiful choreography. Charmaine has become an integrated part of the OT team, helping to create a positive ward environment where rehabilitation felt engaging, person-centred and joyful.

Thank you for all the incredible work you do, Charmaine!

We celebrated our 35th anniversary last Friday, and it was a night to remember! 🎻

Knockbracken Hall was packed out on Friday evening as we celebrated 35 Years of Arts Care, with an extravagant evening of music and dance.

Performances by Arts Care’s own Music Quartet and United in Motion Dance Troupe were followed by a moving performance by the Irish Doctors Orchestra accompanied by the fabulous Smyth Brothers.

Arts Care friends, old and new, also took part in art activities, and browsed our archive art displays as well as helping themselves to our lovely Birthday Cake!

Watch this space for a video reel of this amazing event!

Nature, creativity, and social innovation!

As part of Arts Care's delivery of the Ignite Community Programme, Mhairi Sutherland facilitated a workshop in cyanotype photography, a method of making photographs and prints through sunlight and special light-sensitive chemicals.

Participants drew inspiration from the natural world around them to create artworks that explore new ways of thinking, connecting, and making a difference in their communities.

Musician and Storyteller Anne Harper and Textile Artist Caroline Shimmons worked collaboratively with service users in the Orchard Centre in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust to design their very own Crankie Theatre.

Anne and Caroline then gave residents a performance of the Crankie Theatre, accompanied by beautiful music and entertaining stories.

A Crankie Theatre is a simple, handmade storytelling theatre where a long illustrated paper scroll is slowly rolled through a small wooden frame while a story is performed.

At Arts Care, Crankie Theatres are used widely with service users, who can design and create their own, as well as enjoy performances from our staff and artists using our own Crankie Theatres.

Watch the video below to see their Crankie Theatre in action!

Visual Artist Eddie Rafferty, based within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, recently worked with service users from the Island Day Centre to create a wonderful collaborative piece of art titled 'City with River Running Through It'.

The cityscape is acrylic on card, and was created by planning, adding pencilwork and paint, then finishing with a collage.
