The event season does not stop when summer does

As we move into the colder months, the events might change, but the need for good medical planning certainly does not.

Halloween nights, winter festivals, Christmas markets, corporate functions, concerts and indoor venue events all bring their own considerations. Colder weather, darker evenings, alcohol, busy entrances, people moving between indoor and outdoor spaces, and larger crowds at certain times can all shape what appropriate medical cover looks like.

That is why we do not approach every event with the same set-up.

Paragon Healthcare Services looks at the event itself, the venue, expected attendance and the risks involved before recommending the level of cover that makes sense.

That might mean a smaller medical team for a lower-risk event, or a wider set-up with Nurses, Doctors, Paramedics, treatment facilities and ambulance support where required.

If you have something coming up over the winter months, now is a good time to get the medical side into the plan.

Tell us what you are putting together and we can help you work through what your event may need.

Your gym has an AED. Would your team know what to do with it?

For gyms, leisure centres and sports clubs, that is a question worth asking properly.

You are working around people pushing themselves physically, often in busy spaces with classes, equipment, changing rooms and plenty of members coming and going throughout the day.

If somebody suddenly becomes unwell or collapses, having an AED on the wall is only part of the picture. Staff also need to recognise what is happening, know when to start CPR, and feel comfortable using the equipment in front of them.

Paragon can deliver Basic Life Support, AED and First Aid training on site, giving teams the chance to learn in the environment where those skills may actually be needed.

That can make the training feel much more relevant, particularly for staff who may be first on scene before emergency services arrive.

If you run a gym, leisure centre or sports facility and want to strengthen your team’s first aid response, get in touch and we can talk through the right training option for your site.

Still to do your annual Trust training this year?

We’ve another combined training day coming up at Strand House on Friday 23 October, with places still available.

For Healthcare Assistants and Nurses working in the NI Health Trusts, the session brings together the face-to-face training that needs kept current across the year, including Moving and Handling Patients, Basic Life Support and AED Use, Pressure Damage Awareness, Fire Safety, and Infection Prevention and Control.

It is a full day with plenty covered, but it means you can bring those key areas together on one date rather than trying to work several separate sessions around shifts and rotas.

Friday 23 October
09:30
Strand House, 102 Holywood Road, Belfast, BT4 1NU

If this is still sitting on your list for 2026, we’d be glad to have you along.

Full details and booking are available through the Paragon website.

Today is World Mental Health Day.

It is a useful reminder that supporting mental health at work cannot just be about having the right words on a poster once a year. People need colleagues and managers who feel able to notice when something may be wrong, start a conversation, listen properly and understand where their own role begins and ends.

That is something we can help with at Paragon.

Our First Aid for Mental Health training gives people a clearer understanding of mental health and how to support those around them, with options ranging from an introductory awareness session through to our Level 2 course, which goes further into areas including the effects of drugs and alcohol, using a Mental Health Action Plan and helping to create a more positive mental health culture at work.

The aim is not to turn staff into counsellors. It is to help people feel better prepared to have the right conversation and respond appropriately when someone may need support.

So on World Mental Health Day, perhaps it is worth asking not only whether your workplace talks about mental health, but whether your people feel equipped to support one another when it actually matters.

If you would like to bring mental health training into your workplace, get in touch and we can talk through the options.

Getting medical cover right starts with understanding the event.

Before an event opens, there are a lot of things that shape what the right medical provision actually looks like: expected attendance, audience, venue layout, access for emergency vehicles, alcohol, event type, previous incidents, treatment space and how the team will communicate on site.

That is why event medical cover should never really be a case of simply booking “a few first aiders” and hoping for the best.

At Paragon Healthcare Services, we look at the event itself and build the level of support around what is actually needed, whether that means a smaller team for a lower-risk gathering or a wider medical set-up with Nurses, Doctors, Paramedics, treatment facilities and ambulance support.

And if you are organising an event but have no idea what level of cover you need yet, that is completely fine.

Tell us what you are planning and we can help you work through it before the gates open.

Well, this was such an incredible example of why being prepared really does matter.

Former Down hurler Stephen Keith recently suffered a cardiac arrest after a training session in a Portaferry gym. Thankfully, a trained nurse who was there started CPR immediately, while others went to get nearby defibrillators.

Stephen survived, and the story is a pretty powerful reminder of something we talk about a lot at Paragon: you never really know where or when these skills might be needed.

Most people learn CPR hoping they will never have to use it. But if somebody collapses at work, at the gym, at a sports club or even at home, having someone nearby who knows how to recognise what is happening, start CPR and use an AED can make a huge difference before emergency services arrive.

That is the real value of good training. It gives people something solid to fall back on when a situation suddenly becomes very serious.

So maybe this is a good prompt to ask yourself: would the people around you know what to do?

At Paragon Healthcare Academy, we run bookable Basic Life Support and AED training, alongside First Aid at Work and on-site training for businesses and organisations across Northern Ireland.

Whether you want to book onto one of our sessions yourself or arrange training for a wider team, get in touch or have a look through the courses on our website.

Final call for our October eALS course

This time next month, we’ll be getting ready to welcome our next eALS group to Belfast.

And here’s something worth knowing about the course they’ll be joining.

Resuscitation Council UK’s Advanced Life Support programme has been training healthcare professionals for more than 25 years, with over 20,000 people undertaking ALS training each year.

There’s a reason it has remained such an important part of clinical training.

ALS is not about learning one isolated emergency skill. It brings together recognising the deteriorating patient, structured assessment using ABCDE, adult CPR, cardiac arrest management and the teamwork and leadership needed when several clinicians are responding at once.

Our eAdvanced Life Support (eALS) course delivers that through a blended format, with a day of e-learning followed by a full face-to-face day of simulations, workshops and skill stations.

For doctors, nurses, paramedics and other healthcare professionals working in acute care, emergency, resuscitation or Critical Care Outreach, it is training built around situations where a clear clinical response really matters.

Our next course takes place on Friday 30 October in Belfast, and there are still places available.

Because candidates need time to complete their pre-course preparation, this will be our final push for the October group.

If ALS is part of your role, or something you need as you progress clinically, we’d love to have you join us.

Applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for one.

Full details and booking are available through the Paragon website.

Getting retail teams ready for the busy season

The run into Christmas might still feel a little way off, but for shops and retail teams, this is usually when things start building.

More customers through the doors, seasonal staff joining the rota, longer opening hours and busier trading days all make it a good time to look at first aid provision before things properly ramp up.

Paragon can deliver First Aid at Work Level 3 directly at your premises, giving staff practical training in the environment they actually work in.

The course covers areas including CPR, bleeding, unconsciousness, choking, head injuries, sprains and strains, alongside a wider range of workplace first aid situations.

On-site delivery also makes it easier to train several members of staff together while keeping disruption to the working day to a minimum.

If you manage a retail team and want to get first aid training in place ahead of the busiest part of the year, get in touch and we can arrange a session around your workplace.

Next Wednesday: annual face-to-face training for NI Health Trust staff

We’ve still got a couple of places available for our 30 September session at Strand House.

If you’re a Healthcare Assistant or Nurse and need to keep your annual training current for Trust work, this is a handy date to get it covered before we head into October.

Across the day we’ll work through Basic Life Support and AED Use, Moving and Handling Patients, Pressure Damage Awareness, Fire Safety, and Infection Prevention and Control.

It’s a full day, but it means getting the core face-to-face requirements dealt with together rather than trying to piece them around different dates and shifts.

Wednesday 30 September
09:30
Strand House, 102 Holywood Road, Belfast, BT4 1NU

Only a couple of places are still open for this one, so if you’ve been meaning to get booked in, now would be a good time to do it.

Full details and booking are available through the Paragon website.

16/09/2026

In a little over a month, we’ll be welcoming our next group of clinicians for Resuscitation Council UK’s eAdvanced Life Support course in Belfast.

For anyone working in acute care, emergency settings or resuscitation, ALS brings together several parts of the job that need to work at the same time when a patient becomes seriously unwell: assessment, clinical response, communication and teamwork.

The eALS format combines a day of online learning with a full face-to-face day, where that knowledge is put into practice through simulations, workshops and skill stations.

Candidates will work through recognising and managing the deteriorating patient using an ABCDE approach, standardised adult CPR, managing cardiac arrest within a multidisciplinary team, and the non-technical skills involved in being an effective team member or taking the lead when required.

It is not simply about practising individual procedures. The value of ALS is in bringing those skills together and learning how to apply them as part of a coordinated clinical response.

The course is particularly relevant for doctors, nurses and paramedics working in areas such as ED, ICU, HDU, theatres, acute medical admissions, resuscitation teams and Critical Care Outreach, as well as healthcare professionals who regularly teach these skills.

Our next course takes place on *Friday 30 October in Belfast*, and we’d love to welcome you along.

Applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for one.

Full course information and booking are available through the Paragon website.
