I spent the weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix and I'm still buzzing from it. I've followed Formula One for years, and before I ever worked with people I worked with engines, so there's a part of me that will always be drawn to the garages and the roar of an engine. Being there in person, feeling the cars come past and watching the whole operation up close, was a real experience.
The mechanic in me could have stood and watched the crews all day. The precision of it, the way every job is broken down so that nobody has to think under pressure because the preparation was done long before race day.
What stayed with me most, though, was watching people perform at the very top of their game and seeing how much of that performance is happening in their heads. You notice it in the small moments. A driver who has just lost a place and has to make the next corner clean anyway. The way the good ones reset after a mistake instead of carrying it into the next lap. The calm in the routines before the lights go out, when the pressure is at its highest.
I see the same patterns in the individuals I work with every day, at varying scale. Confidence that comes from preparation rather than hoping. The ability to let a bad moment go quickly. Staying present when the stakes make it tempting to think ahead or look back. Watching it play out at that level, in an environment where a fraction of a second changes everything, was a proper reminder of how much the mind impacts what the body is able to do.
Brilliant weekend. Huge respect to everyone involved, from the drivers to the people you never see on camera. And if anyone reading this works in motorsport, I'd love to compare notes some time. It's a world I'd happily spend more time in.
