"What actually is inflammation & why should I care?”

Inflammation is the body’s natural protective response. When your body senses that something needs attention such as an injury, infection or ongoing irritation, it activates processes designed to protect & repair you.

Inflammation itself isn't necessarily a bad thing; it’s a natural innate part of healing. The problems arise when inflammation becomes persistent or when we are repeatedly triggered. It really is like a simmering internal fire that can in time become intense, damaging & destructive; that’s when symptoms & disease show up.

Symptoms could be digestive discomfort, changes in energy without improvement, skin issues, aches, frequent headaches or feeling constantly generally unwell. These symptoms can have many possible causes, so we don't assume that inflammation is automatically the explanation.

Instead, we look at your individual picture including aspects of nutritional imbalances, food choices, digestive health, stress, lifestyle patterns and other influences on the body's ability to maintain balance.

Sometimes we do everything we think is right, but perhaps we are missing an important link that seems to stop us being the best we want to be.

"Why do I need nutrition? Isn't nutrition just food?"

Food is definitely part of nutrition, but nutrition is much more than simply what you eat.

Food is fuel & its also information. The foods you crave, foods that make you feel content & happy, others that make you feel exhausted, what exactly are these messages.

The foods you regularly eat provide the building blocks your body uses for energy, hormones, nerves, immune health, digestion & repair. many things can be built on sturdy or rocky foundations; which are you providing for yourself?

That doesn't mean there are simply good v bad foods. Different bodies have different needs, & those needs change over time.
My role is to help you understand what your body may need more or less of, rather than giving you another diet to follow.

Until you ask yourself the questions you may never know the answers until the cracks begin.

How can you help your body to achieve its best self from a nutritional perspective?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ‘stress’ is an excess of heat/fire within the body. Whether through the foods we eat or the environment we create, both internal and external. ‘Inflammation’ can be viewed as excess ‘heat, irritation, resistance, anxiety, overwhelm’.

Biologically there are many reasons for ‘inflammation’ though TCM & Ayurvedic medicine both consider ‘heat & fire’ relative to food & environment nutrition and the nervous system.

The constant state of ‘feeling stressed, rushed, tired, anxious’ can all potentially cause and be caused, by poor sleep, poor food choices, exhaustion, moodiness, excess worrying so causing the constant repeating circle.

Before a meal, teach yourself to:

Pause, feel into your body, what is it really asking for →
Breathe, feel the body relax, be thankful for the nourishment you are about to give yourself →

Notice, how do you feel in yourself about what you are eating, is it the best thing for your health →

Receive, ‘I welcome this nourishing food, I am feeding myself what I know I am worthy of’ →

Chew, taste the food, feel the texture, slowly chew. Sense how well it will make you feel →

Digest, as you swallow the food, imagine feeling it travel through your body, feeding your blood, your heart, liver, kidneys, bones.

What we eat is only part of the journey to fully nourishing the body, it is also the attention we give, environment we’re in, the rhythm we create and our emotional state.

Old style v new style cooking.

I’m ‘old school’, I like to know where foods come from & how they’re grown. I like to put time, attention, gratitude and love into growing & choosing foods and in the meals I prepare. Oh no, I’m far from perfect, but I do give attention to what I feed & surround myself with.

I love to cook, to share & to help others make the best of what they can provide for themselves and those around them. It doesn’t need to be expensive, complicated or timely. But what is produced can be a measure of the love in, of, around us.

Meal planning – reduces waste, can be family, group, social connectedness, enjoyable, mentally stimulating, economically efficient & educaitonal. Discovering where to buy foods, what is seasonal, nutritious or not.

Meal prepping – sharing the making of a meal that is planned together creates bond-ship. Sharing the roles creates the time to talk, swap ideas, share special times & memories especially with children and older adults. Biologically it prepares the body by releasing chemicals that will aid digestion and raise mood & overall wellbeing as well as skill building for life.

Cooking – as the prepping of the food releases chemicals ready for digestion, the smell of food cooking does the same. When prepping foods, the brain prepares [from a memory] to digest the oncoming meal. Joined by the smells that cooking foods brings, the taste buds stimulate saliva and the stomach feels ready for its meal! All is the body releasing chemicals that help digestion & metabolism and release dopamine from the brain for mental wellbeing. A quick sandwich, biscuit, or snack does not have the same extensive chemical releases.

Digestion – is not an immediate occurrence. The stomach will empty usually within about 2-4 hours. But the complete metabolism/breakdown of all you’ve eaten in one meal could take 12-72 hours. When frequently snacking or eating big meals two or three times a day, full digestion may never happen, the body becomes stressed because it cannot keep up with the workload of digestion & metabolism; exhaustion can occur and perhaps years later, inflammation becomes a symptom, which becomes a disease.

Snacking and irregular eating patterns may be necessary and/or enjoyable but the body prefers a regular balance in timing of eating to reduce stress on its ability to optimally digest foods. Why?

Digestive anticipation - the brain & gut begin preparing for food intake by producing hormones & enzymes to digest foods & creates the hunger feelings.

GI/intestinal movement – regular balanced food intake provides consistent understandable messages to the gut. When the gut knows ‘the timing’ of what is coming it reduces inner tension.

Blood-glucose regulation - long, irregular gaps followed by very large meals can produce bigger metabolic swings for some people, as can constant snacking instead of, or between, meals.

Circadian balance - meal timing interacts with the body's biological clock and metabolic processes. Eating late at night or at irregular hours can prevent the body from resting & digesting adequately. The body begins to believe it has to constantly eat as ‘starvation’ may be the next step.

Gut microbiome - feeding patterns can greatly alter the gut flora and the actions of gut bacteria abilities. These can lead to bloating, constipation or diarrhoea.

When you're stressed, the sympathetic/"fight-or-flight" activity can alter & irritate GI movement, secretion & blood flow. Conversely, a calmer state supports the parasympathetic processes involved in the "rest and digest" functions. 🍃🍀

What does it mean to discover the ‘root cause’ of inflammation? In fact, what is ‘inflammation’? Often the symptom is the primary focus when we develop a new or worsening health problem. That problem could be a tired cramped muscle; a restricted shoulder movement; lower back pain; or more serious health problems such as autoimmune disease, heart problems, joint pains. In many ways, any health issue can interact with various areas of the body; let’s look at those relational interactions.

Body: What is the physical problem & when? The location, sensation, timing, triggers, patterns, sleep, movement, digestion, food, hydration, medications, etc.

Nervous system: How could stress, threat perception, hypervigilance, poor recovery, or anxiety be amplifying how the symptom feels? Do your pains feel worse when you’re stressed or worried?

Psycho-analytic: What emotions, conflicts, defences, needs, or fears, is the symptom inviting you to examine? Is the problem ‘talking to you’ or is it ‘shouting’?

Metaphorical: If the symptom were a message or metaphor rather than simply an annoyance, what might its location, quality, recurrence, or timing symbolize? When did it start or how?

Meta-physical anatomy: We explore the traditional symbolic associations given to particular body regions—for example, boundaries, control, receiving, safety, anger, grief, or belonging—while considering these as messengers to self-growth and self-awareness.

Nutrition/lifestyle: We look at nourishment, meal patterns & timing, ultra-processed foods, fibre, protein, micronutrients, hydration, sleep, exercise and recovery, with the goal of supporting overall health & wellbeing.

Meaning: How might your body be asking you to notice, change, feel, express, stop doing, or give yourself permission to receive?

Instead of ‘why is this happening to me’ the question becomes, ‘why is this happening for me’; what is it all trying to tell me?’

"What might this symptom be inviting me to become aware of?"

Physical inflammation occurs when these multiple body systems are out of balance in some areas.

Lets opens curiosity for self-awareness and self-trust rather than blaming – blaming yourself, your body, or others for letting you down.

More than the physical body needs nutrition, the ‘whole being’ needs to be nurtured for holistic nourishment. Let's explore and reconnect with your greater self:

Physical → Nervous system → Emotional → Psychoanalytic → Metaphorical → Metaphysical → Nutritional/lifestyle → Integration.

We all have many parts to the person we are. Let’s reconnect and remember the greater inner Self that we innately are.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” (C.G.Jung)
