Today is World Arthritis Day 2026 - part of the Bone & Joint Awareness Campaign.
Did you know that the word Arthritis comes from Greek, arthr- means joint and -itis means inflammation!?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition that causes joints to become stiff and painful. It is basically the wear and tear your body experiences as you get older. So, as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s the most common type of arthritis in the UK. Genetics and nutrition makes a difference. And you may start to get ‘payback’ for how active/abusive you’ve been in your younger days!
Other than pain, tenderness or stiffness you may experience other symptoms such as swelling or a grating or crackling sound when moving the affected joints (Sarah often calls that ‘Scrunching!’ - a ‘technical’ term, obviously).
The severity of symptoms vary greatly from person to person and also between the different joints. For some, the symptoms can be mild and may come & go. Others experience more ongoing and/or severe problems, making it difficult to carry out even everyday activities.
Almost any joint can be affected by osteoarthritis, but the condition is most common in the knees, hips and small joints of the hands - the most used joints of the body!
You should see your Chiropractor or GP if you have persistent symptoms of OA so they can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe any necessary treatment.
