Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic processes going. You paint paper with iron salts, then you arrange whatever you've picked up outside on top of it and leave the whole thing in the sun for a few minutes. Rinse it under the tap and the picture appears - deep blue where the light got through, pale where your leaves and feathers blocked it.

It was invented in 1842, a botanist named Anna Atkins used it to make the first book illustrated entirely with photographs, pressing seaweed onto paper and letting the sun print it.

Thank you to Kate for the wonderful photos from our Cyanotype printing session 📸

We were thrilled to host Council Leader Paula Basnett and Deputy Leader Julie McManus on their first visit to Bentinck Street Community Garden.

During the visit, we discussed Grow’s overarching mission to improve health and wellbeing through nature connection. It was wonderful to show the garden in full bloom, hosting both our Horticultural Level 1 Course, delivered in partnership with Myerscough College, and our dedicated volunteer group.

Hearing firsthand accounts from our volunteers about the transformative impact the garden has had on their lives highlighted the vital role community spaces play in bringing people together.

Thank you to Leader Paula Basnett and Deputy Leader Julie McManus for taking the time to visit and support our work!

We're proud that our Bentinck Street Community Garden is now a recognised host garden for the SPACE project - a research initiative supporting people recovering from cancer through green social prescribing. 🌱

If you're 18+, recovering from cancer, and curious about community gardening, you could join our Wednesday afternoon volunteering sessions at Bentinck Street. No experience needed - just come as you are. You'll be supported to engage at your own pace, whether that's gentle gardening, connecting with others or simply being outdoors.

Why get involved? Boost wellbeing, build confidence, reduce stress, ease fatigue, connect with your community, and help shape future nature-based health services in the NHS and beyond.
