Hi all!
☀️ Why do feet, ankles and lower legs swell in hot weather? 👣
As temperatures increase, it's common to notice swelling in the feet, ankles and lower legs. While this is often a normal response to warm weather, it's important to understand why it happens and how you can help reduce it.
In hot weather, the blood vessels naturally widen (dilate) to help the body regulate its temperature. This can make it more difficult for blood and fluid to return from the lower limbs to the heart, allowing fluid to collect in the tissues. Prolonged sitting or standing, dehydration and reduced circulation can all contribute to swelling.
Here are some practical ways to help minimise swelling:
✔️ Keep well hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
✔️ Stay active with regular walking or gentle ankle exercises to encourage healthy circulation.
✔️ Elevate your feet above heart level where possible to assist fluid returning from the lower limbs.
✔️ Wear comfortable, well-fitting footwear that does not restrict circulation.
✔️ Avoid sitting or standing in one position for long periods, take regular opportunities to move around.
✔️ Reduce your salt intake where possible, as excess salt can contribute to fluid retention.
✔️ If advised by a healthcare professional, compression stockings may help improve circulation and manage swelling.
Although mild swelling during warm weather is often harmless, medical advice should be sought if the swelling is sudden, affects only one leg, becomes increasingly painful, is associated with redness or warmth, or is accompanied by chest pain or shortness of breath.
