💜Today is World Alzheimer’s Day💜
Nearly 1 million people in the UK are living with dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common cause.
Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects the brain. It causes changes to memory, thinking and other everyday abilities, usually gradually over time. It can affect everyone differently, and there is much more to a person than their diagnosis.
A few facts about Alzheimer's
-Music can remain meaningful. Musical memories can sometimes be preserved even when other aspects of memory are affected. Familiar songs can provide enjoyment, comfort and a sense of connection.
-Our senses are closely connected to memory. Familiar scents, tastes and sounds can evoke memories and emotions, sometimes bringing back experiences that feel very distant.
-Alzheimer’s doesn’t define a person. People living with Alzheimer’s continue to have their own personalities, interests, preferences, humour and relationships. They can continue to enjoy socialising, hobbies, music and the things that have always mattered to them. That’s why it’s so important to keep doing the things that bring joy! Put on their favourite music, have a singalong and a little dance, get the photo albums out, have a cup of tea and a chat, keep celebrating birthdays, enjoying hobbies and making new memories wherever possible.
Good care is about supporting someone to live their life, not putting life on hold.
Our care team support people in their own homes helping them to stay comfortable, independent and connected to the things that matter to them while treating them with the dignity, patience and respect they deserve.
Today we’re thinking of everyone living with Alzheimer’s, the families supporting them and the wonderful carers who make a difference every single day 💜
