Fitness on social media is sexy and exciting.

Health and fitness in real life is pretty basic & boring.

The exciting part should be the outcomes.

How much more confident you feel.

How much stronger you feel.

How you feel in the clothes you wear.

How much fitter & healthier you are.

Sure you can create mini goals within your training to keep it exciting.

But these sweat drenched, low lighting, training montages you see on Instagram are just good for the Instagram feed...not real life.

A bit of an inside look at one of my sessions with Abbie...

I've got loads more clips of Abbie and me having a laugh between sets which is more entertaining than this reel but I'll post those later.

I'm planning on doing a lot more of these mic'd up sessions so you can get a feel for what it's like working with me 1 on 1 πŸ‘Š

(Annoyingly, Edits would not do captions)

Yesterday on my stories, I talked about how the plan can change moment by moment in a session.

So many decisions are based on my client's feedback in real time.

How they're feeling.

Their confidence as they warm up.

How they're moving.

Even how they've been feeling in the days or weeks before a session!

Context is everything in Personal Training.

There's no substitute for the human experience.

The perfect training plan doesn't matter and perfect technique does not exist.

All that matters is the person in front of me and what's perfect will change over time and from person to person.

Tammy was doing cardio and nothing else...

Spin, running & classes 4-5 times a week.

She was doing everything "right" but she felt worse, not better.

Then her knee gave out from overuse.

Sound familiar?

It's one of the most common things I see in people over 50, especially women.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-cardio. A couple of spin classes a week is great.

But strength training is ESSENTIAL.

And no, Body Pump doesn't count (my opinion πŸ˜…).

Squats, deadlifts, presses and rows don't just build muscle.

They also:

βœ… Improve mobility and flexibility
βœ… Increase bone density
βœ… Protect your joints
βœ… Reduce your risk of injury

2-3 sessions a week is plenty.

Think of strength training as your main course and cardio as the side order.

Strength first, always πŸ‘Š

I wish I would have just stayed in my lane and focused on what I'm best at.

But social media is enticing and like everyone, I've been guilty of comparison.

What I've done really well for the last 15 years is work with non-stereotypical "gym people" and helped them make fitness a part of their life.

I'm passionate about introducing people to the benefits of the gym and lifting weights.

Especially those over 45 who may have started to give up on themselves and their goals.

Unfortunately social media would have you believe that getting a shredded 6-pack is all that matters and I fell into that trap.

(Forget the fact the industry if rife with eating disorders, drugs and mental health issues)

I've got nothing against fat loss, I've helped plenty of clients lose 10-30kg and completely transform how they look...but it's not ALL that matters πŸ‘Š

Nick and I have worked together off and on for the last 15 years.

Nick's always been interested in strength training, health & longevity but he lacked the confidence that he was doing it correctly.

Various issues with his shoulders and wrists only made Nick more unsure he was doing the right things in the gym.

So this year we began working together again with proper strength training.

Nick is now lifting weights pain-free for the first time in years πŸ’ͺ

Nick jokingly refers to himself as an "old man" and as we age, strength training is the best investment we can make πŸ‘Š
