Stoptober is well underway, and it's not too late to join in. Dave McKelvey from Wirral has a powerful piece of advice for anyone thinking about quitting: stop seeing yourself as someone trying to give up, and start identifying as a non-smoker.

Dave had quit before, but started again while recovering from an operation that left him largely housebound. With another operation on the horizon, he came back to ABL Wirral's free stop smoking service.

This time, the right mindset and ongoing support made it stick. He's breathing more easily, no longer smells of smoke, and is saving more than £300 a month.

"No, I am a non-smoker, and I do not smoke, ever."

Dave's story is one of more than 13,000 across Wirral since 2016. Our support is free, commissioned by Wirral Council, and available to anyone ready to take the first step.

What recent special day would you, or the people you love, have hated you to miss?

Smokefree South West is asking people across the region to think about the days they'd hate to miss, like a child's wedding or the school pickup. Our team in Gloucestershire is here to people be there for those moments.

Our very own Joe Greedy, Head of Service for Healthy Lifestyles Gloucestershire, joined Kate Clark on BBC Radio Gloucestershire to talk about why the first step towards quitting can simply be a chat about your reasons. Health, more time with family, the money you'd save each month: our advisors always start by asking what matters most.
