I nearly forgot part 4. How to help increase your supply when expressing. Expressing can be super stressful and when you focus on volumes it can lead to higher stress, this in turn can increase cortisol levels (stress hormone) leading to a reduction in supply. I know what a difficult system right!!! The most important thing is the continue to remove milk - the more you remove the more your body will replace in turn increasing your supply. Try to make expressing an enjoyable experience, try to create a calm environment, use the tips in part 3. Expressing in the morning can be most helpful as your hormones peak overnight. If you are breastfeeding and expressing ensure to assess your attachment as it may need adjustment to improve milk transfer and then in turn increase supply. Reach out if you have any questions

Preparation for expressing can improve supply massively. Increasing oxytocin (the love hormone) will help improve your milk supply. Creating a calm environment before you begin is super helpful.
Appropriate fl**ge sizes with expressing is the most important part of producing a good yield.
All of these factors together will help you on your expressing journey.
How has expressing been for you?

There are different ways to express from hand expressing (really useful for colostrum or if you need to express and have no equipment available), manual expressing - this is a cost effective way to express but can be very labour intensive on your hand/wrist, and electric expressing - very useful for exclusive or frequent pumpers as its timely with little labour you just need to get the correct sized fl**ge.
If you have any questions just reach out.

Expressing is something that comes up all the time when I support mammies. I thought an inclusive post would be beneficial to have to refer too. With so much to cover I've done it in four parts.. Each part covers a different aspect of expressing.
If you want any specific topics covered please reach out and I will use it as inspiration for a focused post.
I hope you enjoy all things expressing.

Christmas is a brilliant time of year but it can bring along some complications to your Breastfeeding journey.

ChristMastitis got it's name to the increase in mastitis over the festive period.
Well meaning family and friends wanting cuddles with the new addition, unsolicited advice making you feel uncomfortable breastfeeding amongst people, travelling, time loss with all the excitement and missing feeds.
The last thing you want is to develop Mastitis and become unwell in the midst of all the chaos.

So what can you do to avoid Mastitis and how should it be managed?

Continue feeding as normal, no need to increase feeding or expressing. There is no need to empty the breast.

Do not massage or apply additional pressure to the breast - this can increase swelling and causes more issues than good

Use a cold compress between feeds

Use a warm compress when feeding

Use pain killers as needed. Ibuprofen (if appropriate to take and there is no contraindications) can help reduce inflammation

Seek additional support if needed with a breastfeeding specialist or your GP

Remember this is your family, your baby, your health, your feeding journey. Set your boundaries with cuddles and feeding.
