🔥 Hot flushes driving you mad?

You don’t just have to put up with them.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we don’t see every hot flush as the same. Two women can experience almost identical symptoms but have completely different underlying patterns.

- Acupuncture may be used to support symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, irritability and feelings of overheating.

- Chinese medicine looks at your individual pattern — your sleep, digestion, energy, emotions, menstrual history and other symptoms all help build the bigger picture.

- Lifestyle matters too. Hydration, sleep, stress management and identifying your personal triggers — which may include alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods and overheating can all play a part.

The aim isn’t simply to chase the hot flush. It’s to support the whole person through perimenopause and menopause.

If your hot flushes are taking over your day (or night!), acupuncture could be one option to explore.

🔥 HOT FLUSH? Here’s how to cool things down…

When a hot flush hits, it can feel like someone has suddenly turned your internal thermostat up to maximum! 🔥

Try these simple things in the moment:

🌿 Slow your breathing — breathe in gently and make your exhale longer.
💧 Sip cool water and keep well hydrated throughout the day, also run your wrists under a cool tap
👚 Wear light, breathable layers that can quickly be removed.
❄️ Cool your neck and face with a fan, cool flannel or cooling spray and lift up hair or tie up to get off your neck
🛏️ Keep your bedroom cool - and choose breathable bedding.
☕🍷 Notice your personal triggers — alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, stress and hot environments can make flushes worse for some women.

And what does Chinese Medicine say?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we don't view every menopausal hot flush in exactly the same way.

Two women can both experience hot flushes but have different underlying TCM patterns depending on their other symptoms, tongue, pulse, sleep, digestion, emotions and overall health.

Patterns may involve concepts such as Kidney Yin deficiency, Kidney Yang deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation or Heart–Kidney disharmony— sometimes with several patterns occurring together.

This is why proper individual TCM diagnosis by a qualified practitioner matters rather than simply treating the symptom of “feeling hot.”

Acupuncture may be used as a complementary approach to help manage menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, so why not book in and come and see me. Let's get you cooling down !!

Chinese herbal medicine may also be considered where appropriate, but herbs should be individually prescribed by a suitably qualified herbal practitioner — particularly if you're taking medication or have other health conditions.

Menopause may be natural, but that doesn't mean you simply have to put up with feeling boiling!

Back in 1996 when I started training dressed in my white dress, hair in a bun, flesh coloured tights practising high frequency facials and paraffin wax manicures it was oh so different. Along the way things change and we learn life lessons, here’s some of what I’ve learnt.

🔥 HOT FLUSH FORECAST: VERY HOT… with absolutely no warning!

One minute you’re perfectly fine. The next, a wave of heat seems to rise through your chest, neck and face and suddenly you’re wondering whether someone has secretly turned the heating up to 30 degrees!

For some women it’s a gentle warmth. For others it can feel like an intense surge of heat from the inside out— flushed skin, sweating, a racing or more noticeable heartbeat and that desperate need to get COOL… immediately.

And then, just as quickly as it arrived, it can disappear — sometimes leaving you feeling chilly, clammy or completely fed up!

So what’s actually happening?

During perimenopause and menopause, changing oestrogen levels can affect the part of the brain involved in regulating body temperature. Your internal “thermostat” becomes more sensitive to small temperature changes, triggering the body to try to cool itself down — hence the flushing and sweating.

Hot flushes can also be influenced by things such as stress, alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods and warm environments, although triggers are different for everyone.

And while hot flushes are probably the most famous menopause symptom, they’re certainly not the only one.

Throughout Menopause Awareness Month, I’ll be talking about what’s happening to our bodies, some of the symptoms nobody warned us about, and ways we can support ourselves through this transition — including acupuncture, Chinese medicine principles, naturopathic and lifestyle approaches.

Struggling with sleep during perimenopause or menopause?

Hormonal changes can affect body temperature, mood and your natural sleep-wake cycle. Add hot flushes, night sweats, anxiety, a racing mind or those frustrating 2–4am wake-ups, and suddenly sleep can become a real struggle.

A few simple changes can help:
• Get natural daylight soon after waking to support your circadian rhythm.
• Move your body every day — walking, Pilates or strength work all count.
• Keep your bedtime and waking time fairly consistent.
• Keep your bedroom cool, particularly if night sweats are a problem.
• Keep caffeine earlier in the day and be mindful that alcohol can disrupt sleep later in the night.
• Create a calming wind-down routine and reduce screens before bed.
• Consider acupuncture.

When treating sleep with acupuncture and Chinese medicine, I look at your individual sleep pattern. Do you struggle to fall asleep, wake at 2–4am, feel hot at night, have a racing mind or wake feeling exhausted?

These details help me tailor your treatment to you.
Acupuncture may be a useful complementary option for some women experiencing menopause-related sleep problems, alongside lifestyle changes and appropriate medical care.

If menopause has completely changed your nights, perhaps it’s time to give acupuncture a try.

Good sleep supports your mood, energy, concentration and overall wellbeing.

Heat lamp season is back!

If you’ve been in for a treatment and felt that lovely warmth over your tummy, back or feet, this is my TDP lamp

TDP lamps have a heated mineral-coated plate that gives off infrared warmth. I use mine alongside acupuncture when a little extra heat is appropriate for you.

That gentle warmth can help to:
✨ Relax tight muscles and ease muscle spasms
✨ Reduce stiffness and temporarily soothe aches
✨ Increase local blood flow to the area being warmed
✨ Help you feel comfortable and settled during your treatment

In traditional Chinese medicine, warmth is often used for patterns described as “cold” or “stagnation”. Whether it’s suitable depends on your individual symptoms and assessment — not everyone needs more heat.

A little warmth, time to pause, and a treatment tailored to you.

How well do you sleep?

One of the biggest changes many women notice during perimenopause and menopause is sleep.

You might fall asleep perfectly well… then suddenly find yourself wide awake at 2, 3 or 4am. Or perhaps you’re waking hot, restless, anxious or needing the loo — and once you’re awake, your brain decides it’s time to think about absolutely EVERYTHING!

So why does this happen?
As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate, they can influence the systems involved in sleep, mood and temperature regulation. Lower progesterone may also mean losing some of its naturally calming effects.

Melatonin — our sleep-promoting hormone — naturally declines with age, which can make sleep lighter and our body clock more vulnerable to disruption.

Circadian rhythm — your internal 24-hour clock regulates when you feel awake and sleepy. Irregular sleep times, late-night screens, insufficient morning daylight and disrupted nights can all work against this rhythm.

Cortisol — normally higher in the morning and lower at night — is closely linked with your sleep-wake cycle. Stress, anxiety and repeated poor sleep can leave you feeling more alert when you desperately want to switch off.

Hot flushes and night sweats can repeatedly wake you, fragmenting your sleep even when you don’t remember every awakening.

Weight and metabolism can change around menopause too. Changes in body composition and weight can increase the likelihood of problems such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea — another important and sometimes overlooked cause of poor sleep.

And unfortunately, it can become a cycle:

Poor sleep → more fatigue → less activity → increased appetite and cravings → more stress → poorer sleep.

So tell me… are you a good sleeper, or are you a member of the 3am club?

Why can’t I remember that word?
Why can’t I concentrate?
Why am I questioning myself all the time?
Why do I feel so overwhelmed?
Why am I suddenly anxious?
Why does making a simple decision feel so difficult?
And… am I still me?

For many women, some of the most unsettling symptoms of perimenopause and menopause aren’t the hot flushes — they’re the changes in how they think and feel.
Brain fog, forgetfulness, difficulty finding words, poor concentration, indecisiveness, anxiety, disrupted sleep, low motivation and a loss of confidence can all be experienced during the menopause transition.

You may even start doubting yourself at work, questioning abilities you’ve had for years or experiencing feelings similar to imposter syndrome.
And when several of these things happen at once, it’s easy to wonder, “What is happening to me?”

Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect areas involved in mood, sleep and cognitive function, so these symptoms can feel very real — and very frustrating.

This October, I want to get us talking about the parts of menopause that aren’t discussed enough. Not just hot flushes and periods, but confidence, memory, anxiety, sleep, emotions and that strange feeling of simply not quite feeling like yourself.

At Olive Tree, I use acupuncture alongside Chinese medicine principles, naturopathic and lifestyle support to complement conventional menopause care and support overall wellbeing.

Look through the questions in the images…
How many have you quietly asked yourself?
And which change surprised you most?

👇 Let’s talk about it below — because chances are, someone else has been wondering exactly the same thing.
New, persistent or concerning cognitive or mood changes should always be discussed with your GP rather than automatically assuming they are menopause-related.
