SMiRA is a small charity of volunteers who rely on fundraising and donations. All monies received go towards the running of the charity and projects relating to Selective Mutism.

There are a number of ways you can support us, from sending a donation, to setting up your own fundraising activity, or perhaps earning us a little cashback whilst doing your regular shop - head to our website to find out more.

You may wish to donate in memory of a loved one, or leave a legacy in your will.

Get in touch for support setting up a donation or fundraising activity. All donations large or small, make a big difference.

One of the most elite universities on Earth handed its classroom to anyone with Wi-Fi.

MIT has put almost all of its courses online. Free. No tuition, no application, no acceptance letter.

Think about what people pay for this. Families take on serious debt for a shot at those lecture halls in Cambridge. The same material is sitting on a website, waiting for a kid in Lagos or a retiree in Leeds.

You won’t walk away with the degree. The knowledge, though? That’s yours if you want it.

Most people will scroll right past this.

Me cavewoman today. 🦴 Me explain brain thing:

Brain have shelf. Small shelf.
Shelf called WORKING MEMORY.

Shelf hold thing you use RIGHT NOW.

You sit in meeting, boss talk fast.
You need remember: task one, task two, name of person you supposed to email.

That all sit on small shelf. Shelf to hold maybe 5 or 7 thing if lucky caveperson.

Brain also have big shelf far back in brain.
That called LONG-TERM MEMORY.

Long-term shelf hold EVERYTHING.
Name. Face of mother. How to tie shoe. Back shelf stay big.
Back shelf stay full forever, mostly.

Small shelf = juggle thing NOW.
Big shelf = hold thing FOREVER.

Brain also have cup, that called, SHORT-TERM MEMORY.
Hold thing little bit.
You hear name or number. Cup hold name or number few second. Then cup dump.
Gone.

Working memory different.

Working memory not just HOLD water. Working memory also STIR water. Working memory DO thing with information while holding it.

You not just remember number…you remember number AND do math with number AND remember why you doing math in first place.

That much harder job.
That why shelf so small.

Now, who struggle with small shelf?
ADHD.
Autism.
People tired.
People stressed.
Shelf get knocked over easy by worry, hunger, loud room.

Shelf not broken. Shelf just... smaller than other caveperson shelf.

Why this matter?
Small shelf needed to:

▪️Following instruction with many step.
▪️Conversation. Hold what person say WHILE thinking what you say back. Hard job for small shelf.
▪️Reading. Hold beginning of sentence while eye reach end of sentence.
▪️Math in head.

When shelf overload, or neurodivergent, thing fall off.

Person look "lazy".
Person NOT lazy.
Shelf just small and busy.

This why many people write list. Set timer. Say thing out loud twice. Use sticky note.

Smart caveperson use tool 😜
