BRACE funds world class clinical and laboratory research into Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia to find better treatments, achieve earlier diagnosis and one day, a cure. BRACE - Alzheimer's Research is a registered charity (No. 297965) established in 1987 to finance research into conditions of the elderly, particularly Alzheimer's disease. We support research projects undertaken in universities and hospitals in the South West of the UK, particularly in Bristol, which is a centre of excellence for neuroscience research.

This weekend, the clocks go back one hour. For some people living with dementia, the change in daylight and routine can be challenging 🕰️

Shorter days and darker evenings may affect sleep, mood and body clocks, and can sometimes make symptoms associated with sundowning, such as confusion & restlessness, more noticeable.

If you're caring for someone with dementia, consider how these changes might affect them and take steps to help maintain a calming routine.

Former BBC journalist Ali Vowles has joined forces with BRACE to become our latest ambassador.

This partnership is personal for Ali as her late mum spent the last few years of her life living with dementia.

Over the years, Ali has supported the charity in various ways, from fundraising to hosting conferences and events.

Ali Vowles, says:

"Becoming an Ambassador for BRACE feels like a particularly good fit and a very personal one.

Having known the charity for some time, both personally and professionally, I’ve always been impressed by what it is trying to achieve. Dementia is something that has touched my family very personally, so supporting research into dementia and Alzheimer’s is incredibly important to me.”

Autumn & winter can be particularly tough when caring for someone with dementia.

Colder weather can bring additional difficulties and may even make symptoms feel worse. Some people may not recognise when they’re cold, or find it hard to communicate it.

Here are some simple ways to support them through the colder months.

Symptoms of depression can be common for people living with dementia. Caring for a loved one can also take an emotional and physical toll, sometimes leading to feelings of depression or anxiety.

Remember, looking after yourself is just as important as caring for others. ❤️

This , we encourage everyone to make time for their own wellbeing and reach out for support if things feel overwhelming.

The UK Government has announced a new £48 million partnership aimed at speeding up dementia research and the development of new treatments.

The investment includes £33 million of government funding and will help recruit more people for clinical studies, improve access to health and research data, and support the search for new treatments.

Increased investment in research brings us closer to earlier diagnosis, better treatments and, one day, a cure.

At BRACE, we’re proud to be funding research that is working towards this.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their pioneering work on optogenetics.

Their research has helped scientists better understand how the brain works, including how it influences our memories, feelings and behaviour.

It’s another reminder of how far neuroscience has come, and how much there is still to discover about the brain and conditions such as dementia.

At BRACE, we’re proud to fund research helping to improve our understanding and bring us closer to better ways of diagnosing and treating dementia.
