👣 Toenail trauma — why early advice matters
These two big toenails were damaged by trauma, leaving dark bruising beneath the nails. This is called a subungual haematoma — a collection of blood trapped underneath the nail.
Had this patient attended soon after the injury, it may have been possible to drain the trapped blood to relieve pressure and discomfort, following assessment. This is generally most effective within the first 24–48 hours, before the blood clots.
As the nails grow, the discolouration should gradually move towards the tips. Injured nails can sometimes loosen or shed, and recovery takes time.
💜 If you injure a toenail, particularly if it becomes painful or starts throbbing, please seek advice promptly. Don’t attempt to drain it yourself.
