Cells4Life UK's Largest Cord Blood Bank
3X more stem cells at the point of therapy
Store multiple samples Your baby’s umbilical cord could change their life.

Cells4Life stores more UK stem cell samples than any other private bank. We are a science-led organisation dedicated to delivering the best stem cell storage service in the world. It contains billions of powerful stem cells, which already form therapy for more than 80 conditions worldwide, such as immune disorders and blood cancers. These stem cells are central to promising clinical trials for some of today’s most debilitating conditions – from cancer to diabetes, cerebral palsy to arthritis. In the moments after birth, you have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to save your baby’s umbilical cord blood for future therapeutic use. As the UK’s largest cord blood bank, Cells4Life helps parents to make the most of this opportunity. We were founded in 2002 by a group of leading doctors and scientists to offer stem cell collection and storage in the United Kingdom. Initially, these doctors and scientists sought to store their own children’s umbilical cord tissue and blood for future use. Now, 18 years later, we have expanded to store more than 140,000 samples for customers in over 54 countries. In January 2020, we also became the UK’s first stem cell storage bank to offer placenta banking, meaning you can choose to store cells from the placenta and cord blood to maximise the therapeutic possibilities of your baby’s sample. Cells and tissue from the placenta have been used since the early 20th century to treat burns and wounds. Now, clinical trials are investigating its use in therapies for conditions such as Crohn’s disease, diabetes, blindness, and many more. We are the UK’s largest cord blood bank and also the most experienced, having been established for more than 18 years. We have already released 13 samples, two of which have been used to treat autism and cerebral palsy. Everything we do is designed to ensure you can make the most of your child’s cord blood. That is why we also introduced our exclusive TotiCyte cord blood processing technology in 2017. With TotiCyte, we are able to preserve three times more stem cells than the industry standard AXP processing method, which powers our Cells service. Initial results from hundreds of clinical trials using cord blood stem cells have been positive and shown that they could help your child to live a longer, healthier life. They could regrow organs, treat diseases and disorders, and repair damaged tissue. Make sure your child doesn’t miss out on the future of medicine. How long can stem cells really stay frozen?
It’s an important question for families considering cord blood and cord tissue storage: will those cells still work in 10, 20 or even 30 years?
A new peer-reviewed study has found that mesenchymal stromal cells stored for more than a decade remained viable, genetically stable and functional after thawing.
The wider evidence goes back even further. Studies of cryopreserved cord blood have found functional blood-forming stem cells after more than 20 years — with research now extending to samples stored for up to 27 years.
So, what does the science actually tell us about the long-term storage of stem cells?
Read the full article to explore the evidence.

Could umbilical cord stem cells help repair damaged knee cartilage?
Cartistem, a stem cell treatment that has been used in South Korea since 2012, is now being tested in a major US phase 3 trial for knee osteoarthritis.
The treatment uses mesenchymal stem cells derived from donated umbilical cord blood, which are implanted directly into damaged areas of cartilage during surgery.
Previous research has shown encouraging signs of cartilage regeneration, but can it also deliver lasting improvements in pain and function? The new US trial is designed to find out.
Read the full story to discover what we know so far and what this could mean for the future of regenerative medicine.

Could a protein in the mother’s blood help predict pre-eclampsia months before symptoms appear?
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have identified isthmin-2 as a promising early warning signal for pre-eclampsia and foetal growth restriction.
Using placental stem cells and 3D “mini-placentas”, the team went further - uncovering how this protein may help the placenta establish the blood supply a growing baby needs.
It’s a fascinating example of how stem cell research is helping scientists understand pregnancy from its earliest stages.
Read the full story to discover what the researchers found and what it could mean for future pregnancy care.

Stored at her birth. Sixteen years later, her cord blood could offer her brother a new possibility.
Gabriel Machado, a teenager with cerebral palsy, has been accepted onto an expanded access programme at Duke University to receive an infusion of his younger sister Maria’s stored cord blood.
His story highlights why researchers are exploring cord blood’s potential to help children with cerebral palsy - and why sibling cord blood is part of that research.
Our latest blog shares Gabriel’s story, explores the evidence so far, and explains what it could mean for families considering cord blood banking.

After an 18-year-old student suffered severe burns, her doctors were determined to spare her the facial scarring that would be the inevitable result of skin grafts. Instead, they treated the burns with exosomes, with results that the care team lead, internationally recognised burns surgeon Dr Marc Jeschke, described as "absolutely remarkable." Hit the link below to learn more about this world-first treatment.

Surgeons in Canada have carried out a novel, world-first treatment using exosomes on a 18-year-old patient with severe facial and neck burns.
