Pendleside Hospice Our first service, a telephone helpline, was provided from a small office in the old Marsden Hospital.
(211)

Pendleside Hospice exists to promote and enhance the quality of life for people with advancing long term and life limiting illnesses, as well as provide support for their families and carers 💛 Local people commenced fundraising in October 1988 to provide hospice care for Burnley and Pendle people diagnosed with cancer and other life limiting-illnesses. A day care service soon followed and we were allocated space at Pendle Community Hospital, whilst fundraising continued to build the Hospice, which opened in 1997. Since then, many thousands of local people have benefitted from our specialist palliative and end-of-life services. We now offer day therapy, specialist physiotherapy, complementary therapies, inpatient care, 24/7 hospice at home, counselling, bereavement support and spiritual care. Pendleside was built “by the people and for the people of Burnley and Pendle”; a statement that remains true today. Our vital services are only possible because of the outstanding charitable support of local people, who have given generously to Pendleside over many years. Without that support, the Hospice wouldn't be able to provide care that is relied upon by so many local families at very difficult times in their lives.

Hospice care doesn’t happen by chance. 💛

Behind every patient and family we support is a community of people helping to make Pendleside’s care possible.

Our volunteers play a huge part in that. From welcoming customers and sorting donations in our retail shops, to delivering meals through Meals on Wheels and helping patients get to appointments through our Patient Transport service, every volunteer gives their time to support local people. 🚗🍴

And right now, we need more volunteers to join us.

Whether you can volunteer in one of our shops, deliver meals or help with patient transport, your time can make a real difference.

This Hospice Care Week, we’re reminding people that hospice care shouldn’t be left to chance. Our volunteers are an important part of making sure Pendleside can continue to be here for local people when they need us.

💛 Could you be part of our volunteer team?

As part of Hospice Care Week, this year’s theme is ‘Don’t Leave Hospice Care to Chance’ - a reminder of the importance of making sure everyone who needs hospice care has the opportunity to access it. 💛

For Jean, being cared for at Pendleside has meant more than receiving medical care. It has meant having a team around her who take the time to understand what matters to her, listen to her wishes and, wherever possible, help make those wishes happen.

Recently, Jean was treated to a special brunch when Dempsey’s brought her one of her favourite meals to the Hospice. Jean had hoped to visit Dempsey’s herself, but when she became too unwell to leave, the team at Dempsey’s brought her favourite brunch to her instead.

Jean also has a special love for butterflies. Knowing how much they mean to her, her daughter Hayley and her friends came to the Hospice one day wearing beautiful light-up butterfly wings, creating a wonderful surprise for Jean. In addition, many of our nurses have been wearing butterfly transfer tattoos as a lovely gesture of care and affection for Jean. 🦋✨

This is what hospice care is about. It is so much more than end of life care. It's about quality of life, and making sure a person’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs are cared for too.

💛 Did you know that just around 20% of Pendleside Hospice’s funding comes from the NHS?

That means around 80% of the cost of providing our care has to be raised through the support of our local community.

At Pendleside, providing care costs around £6.8 million every year. So, we rely on our community coming together to help make sure we can continue to be here for local people and their families.

From taking part in fundraising events and challenges, organising your own fundraising, making donations and volunteering, to donating items and shopping in our Pendleside charity shops. There are so many ways you can help.

Every pound raised helps us provide vital care and support to people across our local community. 💛

Hospice care shouldn’t be left to chance. And neither should the funding that makes it possible.

This Hospice Care Week, we’re proud to be joining hospices across the country for Hospice UK's “Don’t Leave Hospice Care to Chance” campaign.

But what does that mean?

It means that everyone who needs hospice care should be able to access it, wherever they live and whenever they need it. Hospice care shouldn’t be something people have to leave to chance and neither should the funding that makes it possible.

At Pendleside, providing care costs around £6.8 million each year, with just 20% of our funding coming from the NHS. The rest needs to be raised through the incredible support of our local community.

Because hospice care means so much more than end of life care. It can mean expert medical support, help managing symptoms, emotional and practical support for families, or simply having someone there when things feel difficult.

But what does hospice care mean to you? 💛

Maybe you’ve experienced hospice care yourself, supported a loved one, volunteered with us, or simply know that Pendleside is here for local people.

We’d love to hear from you. Tell us in the comments:

What does hospice care mean to you?

💫 Starlight Stories 💫

As we count down to our Starlight Walk event, we're sharing the stories of some of our walkers, and the reasons they're taking part. This is Lesley's.

For Lesley, Pendleside Hospice has become an important source of support since she was diagnosed with terminal stage 4 cancer.

Through the Hospice’s Monday Palliative Group, Lesley has accessed psychotherapy, complementary and holistic therapies, social groups and talking therapies. Her family have also expressed how Pendleside has given them somewhere to turn for support and guidance during what is an incredibly difficult time.

Now, Lesley's family are coming together to take part in our Starlight Walk. Her daughter Hayley and granddaughter Emily have decided to take on the walk together, with Lesley planning to attend too and cheer them on!

Emily told us, "Pendleside means so much to us. My mum and I wanted to do something together to give back and that’s why we decided to take part in the Starlight Walk. We are doing this for my Nan, who means the world to us, and for the incredible team at Pendleside, who are supporting her through one of the hardest times in her life."

Hayley added, "Emily currently has a broken thumb and arthritis in the foot, and well, I only have one leg, so this isn’t going to be easy for us, even if it is technically a walk in a park!"

Lesley’s husband, Simon, has even been baking for the members of the Group, and lucky staff members too!

By taking part in the Starlight Walk, Hayley and Emily are helping to raise vital funds so Pendleside can continue providing care, compassion and support to local people and their families when they need it.

If you’d like to join them, there’s still time to sign up!
