A clinical trial published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements studied magnesium L-threonate in 15 adults with moderate ADHD. Participants took L-threonic acid magnesium salt for up to 12 weeks. By the end of the study, 47% of participants met the researchers’ definition of a clinical response, which required at least a 25% reduction in ADHD symptoms on the Adult ADHD Investigator Symptom Rating Scale (AISRS), along with a Clinical Global Impression–Improvement (CGI-I) score of 2 or lower.
The participants showed significant improvements in overall ADHD symptoms, clinical improvement scores, and the “shifting” measure of executive function, which reflects the ability to mentally switch between tasks, situations, or ways of thinking. The researchers also reported significant favorable changes in IQ and WASI-II cognitive-test performance within the study group. However, this was a very small, open-label pilot study with no placebo control, so it cannot establish that magnesium L-threonate itself caused these improvements. The researchers concluded that the results justified larger, double-blind controlled trials.
