As a holistic therapist, self-care is so much more than taking a relaxing bath, lighting a candle, or finding a little time to yourself. Although these things can be wonderful, true self-care is about nurturing the whole of you β mind, body, emotions and spirit.
In the busyness of everyday life, it can be easy to put everyone else first, as I did for two years, much to my detriment. Oten without stopping to ask a simple question: How am I, really?
Sometimes, we become so accustomed to carrying everything that we forget we are allowed to put things down.
Self-care begins with listening to yourself.
It is noticing when your body needs rest, when your mind feels overwhelmed, and when your heart needs a little kindness. It is recognising that you don't have to be strong every moment of every day, and that taking time for yourself is not selfish β it is an important part of maintaining your wellbeing.
From a holistic perspective, we are not separate parts that can be cared for in isolation. Our thoughts, emotions, physical health and sense of connection all influence how we feel. When one area of our lives is under strain, we may notice the effects elsewhere, too.
This is why small, mindful acts of self-care can be so meaningful.
Give yourself permission to slow down. You don't have to fill every moment with productivity. Sometimes, doing nothing is exactly what you need.
Listen to your body. Nourish yourself with food that supports you, make time for movement that feels good, and allow yourself to rest without guilt.
Make space for your emotions. You don't need to have everything figured out. Allow yourself to feel what you feel, without judgement, and reach out for support when you need it.
Reconnect with nature. Take a gentle walk, notice the changing seasons, feel the fresh air on your face and allow yourself to be present in the moment.
Create moments of stillness.A few quiet breaths, a cup of tea enjoyed without distraction, or time spent in a peaceful environment can offer a welcome pause from the demands of daily life.
Honour your boundaries. Saying no to something that drains you can mean saying yes to your own needs. You are allowed to protect your energy and make choices that support your wellbeing.
Treat yourself with compassion. Speak to yourself as you would speak to someone you love. You deserve the same patience, understanding and kindness that you so readily offer others.
As a holistic therapist, I see self-care as an ongoing relationship with yourself rather than another item on your to-do list. It isn't about achieving perfection or always feeling calm and balanced. It is about learning to recognise what you need and responding with gentleness whenever you can.
Sometimes, self-care means taking action. Sometimes, it means resting. Sometimes, it means asking for help, setting a boundary, or acknowledging that life feels difficult at the moment.
And sometimes, it simply means giving yourself permission to be exactly where you are.
You don't have to wait until you are exhausted to deserve rest. You don't have to reach breaking point before you ask for support. And you don't have to earn the right to look after yourself.
You are worthy of care, just as you are.
Perhaps the most important act of self-care is remembering that you matter, too.
Take a breath. Soften your shoulders. Give yourself a moment.
You spend so much of your life caring for others. Let yourself be cared for, too.
