The Winter Blues: Your Winter Wellbeing Plan. Over the past week, we’ve explored the lifestyle medicine pillars and how they can help support our wellbeing through winter. Let’s bring them together.

The Winter Blues: Pillar 6 - Reducing Harmful Substances. This time of year can bring plenty of temptation — an extra drink, another late night, food that doesn’t leave us feeling our best, or people and situations that drain our energy. Our approach? Less guilt. More awareness. More choice. Because looking after yourself isn’t about following a rigid set of rules. It’s about understanding what works for you.

The Winter Blues: Pillar 5 - Connection. For some people, the run-up to Christmas is full of people, plans and parties. For others, it can be a time when loneliness feels particularly sharp. And even when we’re surrounded by people, we can still feel disconnected. Human connection is an important part of our health. But connection looks different for everyone.

The Winter Blues: Pillar 4 - Stress. The lead-up to Christmas can be a lot. Financial pressure. Family dynamics. Work deadlines. Social expectations. The endless list of things we feel we should be doing. And sometimes, when everyone else seems to be full of festive excitement, admitting that we’re struggling can feel even harder. So here’s your reminder: you are allowed to look after yourself, too. You don’t always need a weekend away or a whole afternoon to recharge. Sometimes it’s the small moments that make the difference.

The Winter Blues: Pillar 3 - Movement. Let’s be honest: when it’s cold, wet and dark, the sofa can be very persuasive. But our bodies still need movement in winter. Regular physical activity supports our physical health, sleep, energy and mood — and getting outside brings the added benefit of daylight. The good news? You don’t need to train for a marathon.

The Winter Blues: Pillar 2 - Nutrition. Is anyone else ready to fall in love with soup season? There’s something wonderful about a pot of soup or stew bubbling away while it’s cold outside. And winter food can be both comforting and nourishing. We often crave heavier, more substantial foods at this time of year. That’s not something to feel guilty about. The answer isn’t restriction — it’s finding ways to make our favourite comfort foods work for our health, too.

The Winter Blues: Pillar 1 - Sleep. When it’s dark when we wake up and dark again before we finish work, our usual sleep rhythms can take a bit of a hit. Light helps regulate our body clock, and good sleep supports our mood, concentration, energy and overall health. So, what can we do?

The clocks have changed, the days are shorter, the mornings are darker, and getting out from under the duvet suddenly feels like a much bigger ask. For many of us, winter brings changes in energy, sleep, mood and motivation. Add the pressures of the festive season, and it can feel like a lot. But what if, instead of fighting our way through winter, we focused on looking after ourselves a little differently? No perfection. No pressure to overhaul your life. Just practical ways to support your health through the darker months.

We are passionate about the benefits movement has in terms of not just the physical activity itself, but also in bringing people together. Volunteering to support others is such a rewarding thing to do. And being the support squad involves much more movement than people realise! Perhaps a walk. But have you ever considered the work out you get just from clapping others on? In one clap, our hands travel approximately 25cm. An average clapping rate is around 150 - 300 claps per minute. So that means an enthusiastic clap covers 75m in a minute. Our team were at our local junior parkun this week - it lasted about 15minutes. That’s over a km of hand movement for each marshal clapping people round! Easily another team 10k done!
