Slime in Play Therapy
slime is a clinical tool for sensory regulation, emotional expression, and working through frustration rather than just a messy craft.
It looks like a mess, but to a play therapist, it looks like healing.
Parents often ask "Why is there always slime in the playroom?"
While it might just look like a trendy, messy craft at home, slime is actually a powerful clinical tool in play therapy.
Here is why we use it:
Sensory Regulation: For a child experiencing anxiety, trauma, or a hyper-aroused nervous system, the repetitive squeezing, pulling, and kneading of slime acts as a physical anchor. It activates the tactile system to help them ground themselves and calm down.
Safe Expression of "Sticky" Feelings: Slime can be pounded, stretched, or rolled. It changes shape under pressure. For children who don't have the words for big emotions like anger or frustration, slime becomes a safe, non-verbal outlet to play those feelings out.
Tolerating Frustration & Imperfection: Sometimes slime is too sticky, gets stuck to hands, or doesn't stretch perfectly. This offers a beautiful, low-stakes moment to practice distress tolerance. We explore what it feels like when things get messy and out of control, and how to work through it together.
Play is a child's language, and toys (even the messy ones!) are their words.
