This Wednesday there will be a significant solar eclipse in our region. It’s very easy to suffer permanent sight damage during an event like this. Here is some advice on how to make this a fun and safe experience.

If you want to use eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, make sure they are genuine eclipse glasses with specially designed filters that meet the international safety standard ISO 12312-2:2015(E). If you're unsure whether a product is certified, don't use it. Don't use eclipse glasses if the lenses are scratched, torn or damaged.

Alternatively, you can watch the eclipse indirectly without any specialist equipment at all. Safe options include:

-a pinhole viewer, which you can easily make at home.
-projecting the Sun's image onto a sheet of paper using a simple pinhole projector.

How you can take action today:

- Schedule an exam: Book a comprehensive eye test for your child.
- Encourage outdoor play: Aim for 2 hours of outdoor time daily to help slow myopia progression.
- Take screen breaks: Use the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds).
