Day 9: Did You Know (sleep edition)...
..your best and most vivid dreams happen just before you wake up?

Why is that?
REM sleep is when the most vivid dreams occur. Different factors can influence the intensity but it is during that REM period your brain is most active and that is why. Sleep doesn’t deliver REM evenly across the night, though. Early cycles hold very little REM, and REM periods stretch longer as the night goes on. That’s why the dreams you remember tend to be the last ones before you wake. Sleep cycles throughout the night in 90-120 minute intervals ad most REM occurs in the early hours of the day, before waking.

This matters for more than dream recall. REM sleep is the stage during which the brain processes emotionally charged experiences, essentially running them through a kind of nightly emotional editing suite, stripping away some of the distress while retaining the memory. Cutting sleep short, even by an hour, disproportionately reduces this final, REM-rich phase.

For people carrying unprocessed emotion such as anxiety, grief, or trauma, REM sleep is doing some of the brain’s most important healing work. Protecting sleep length and quality isn’t just good advice. It’s therapeutic!
Hypnosis can help processing and aid quality sleep. Get in touch if sleep issues are impacting your life.

Day 8: Did You Know (Your Sleep edition)...
..alcohol might help you fall asleep but it adversely affects the rest of your night?

Alcohol is one of the most widely used sleep aids in the UK. And it is understandable when you know that It depresses the central nervous system, reducing the time it takes to fall asleep.

But, the effects are not so positive when you unravel the rest. After you fall asleep alcohol suppresses REM sleep and causes more awakenings in the second half of the night.

REM sleep is when emotional memories are processed, stress hormones are regulated, and the brain consolidates learning. Suppress it consistently and the effects accumulate: low mood, heightened anxiety, difficulty concentrating, emotional reactivity, all of which make the next night's sleep harder too.

Many people using alcohol to manage anxiety or aid sleep are caught in a cycle where each solution makes the underlying problem worse.
It is not a healthy solution.
Hypnotherapy addresses both ends of that loop. It addresses the anxiety driving the behaviour, and the sleep disruption sustaining it.

Day 7: Did You Know (Sleep edition)...
..caffeine's half-life is five to six hours?

I think we all know that caffeine is a stimulant. It has long been used as a method of giving the brain and body a boost. When used with intention it can be useful, although there are also alternatives.
But...That afternoon coffee you had at 3pm? Its half-life runs about five to six hours, so an afternoon coffee can still leave a quarter of its caffeine in your system at bedtime.

A quarter of the caffeine from a 3pm cup is still circulating in your bloodstream at 9pm. By midnight, it's still not fully cleared. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors. Adenosine is the chemical that builds up during the day and creates the pressure to sleep. When you block those receptors for long enough the pressure to sleep doesn't register properly. And that happens even when you're exhausted.

What we eat and drink can impact our sleep.
Caffeine is one of the most common and underestimated contributors to disrupted sleep and it's often the last thing people consider.
Hypnotherapy and coaching doesn't just address the psychological side of sleep difficulties. It helps clients become more attuned to everything that's interfering with their rest often revealing patterns they hadn't noticed before.

If you want to find out which of your habits and patterns are adversely affecting you, get in touch.

Day 6: Did You Know... (Sleep)
..screens before bed do double damage?

Most people know that blue light from screens suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals to your brain that it's time to sleep. But there's actually a second problem: the content itself keeps your brain alert when it should be winding down.

Scrolling through news, social media, or even an engaging programme keeps the brain's threat-detection and reward systems active, precisely the systems that need to quieten for sleep to begin. You're not just exposing your eyes to the wrong light. You're feeding your brain the wrong information at the wrong time.

So switch off those screens before bed to give your brain the signal it is time to rest and sleep.
Hypnotherapy also works in part by teaching the brain a different relationship with the pre-sleep period, one of gradual winding down rather than continued stimulation. Self-hypnosis recordings used before bed can replace the scroll habit naturally, and with noticeably better results!

Day 5: Did You Know (Your Sleep version)...
..your circadian rhythm is almost 24 hours (but not quite)?

Left in total darkness with no external time cues, the human circadian rhythm (the internal biological clock) drifts slightly longer than a day. It's actually closer to 24.2 hours. External cues, such as light is what keeps it anchored to the actual 24-hour cycle, particularly morning sunlight, which resets the internal clock each day.

This is why shift workers, frequent travellers, and people who spend long periods without natural light exposure can experience profound disruption to their sleep, mood, and physical health. The clock is running but it just needs the right cues to stay on time.

So what does this mean for hypnotherapy?

A dysregulated circadian rhythm is one of the most common underlying factors in chronic sleep difficulties. Hypnotherapy helps recalibrate the nervous system's relationship with rest, making it easier for the body to respond to its own natural sleep signals, even when life has knocked those signals off course. If you are a frequent traveller the techniques can be taught to you to help you utilise them when you travel.

Day 4: Did You Know...
..your body temperature has to drop before you can fall asleep?

As you prepare for sleep, your core body temperature falls slightly. This drop is one of the brain's key signals that it's time to rest. That dip is part of the signal that it's time to rest which is one of the reasons a cool bedroom is recommended for quality sleep.

This is also the same reason why a warm bath before bed can actually help you sleep. It seems counterintuitive but in reality it draws blood to the surface of the skin, releases heat from the body, and accelerates that necessary cool-down.

So what does this mean for hypnotherapy?

The body's sleep onset is a finely tuned physiological process. Hypnotherapy supports sleep not just psychologically but physiologically helping the nervous system downregulate, reducing core arousal levels, and making that temperature drop easier to achieve. The mind and body are not separate systems.

Day 3: Did You Know Your Sleep...
..is so important that just 72 hours without sleep can produce symptoms that resemble acute psychosis?

A peer-reviewed study in Frontiers in Psychiatry analysed sleep deprivation research involving 760 participants. Within 24–48 hours of sleep loss, perceptual distortions, anxiety, irritability and disorientation began. After 48–90 hours, complex hallucinations and disordered thinking emerged. After 72 hours, the clinical picture closely resembled acute psychosis or delirium.

These weren't people with pre-existing conditions. These were ordinary people deprived of sleep.

So what does this mean?
Well of course most of us are not managing without any sleep whatsoever but can experience chronic poor sleep or reduced sleep.
Many people living with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or emotional dysregulation are also struggling with disrupted sleep and the two conditions feed each other in a relentless loop. Hypnotherapy works with both simultaneously calming the nervous system and helping the brain find its way back to genuine, restorative rest.
Get in touch to break the cycle.

Day 2: Did You Know (sleep edition)...
..the record for staying awake is 11 days ( and it nearly broke someone)?

In 1964, a 17-year-old named Randy Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours as part of a science fair project. By day ten he couldn't complete simple maths, was experiencing hallucinations, and showed signs of serious cognitive impairment.

Medical examination ten days after he finally slept showed everything had returned to normal. His brain recovered. But what his experiment revealed about what sleep deprivation does to a human mind was striking and researchers have been studying it ever since.

Guinness World Records no longer accepts attempts to beat this record. The risks are considered too great.

Sleep isn't optional maintenance. It's a biological necessity. When hypnotherapy helps someone sleep better, it isn't a nice bonus it's restoring one of the brain's most fundamental processes. Everything else: mood, memory, resilience, emotional regulation absolutely depends on it. Book in now to sort your sleep out!

Day 1 of our new 'Did You Know' series.
This time focusing on that thing we do every day...sleep!

Did you know your Sleep...
..has its own cleaning cycle?

While you sleep, your brain runs a biological waste removal system called the glymphatic system. This is a network of channels that flushes out toxic proteins and metabolic waste that accumulate during the day.

Research published in The Lancet Neurology describes this as one of the most significant discoveries in sleep science of the past decade. The process is primarily active during deep, slow-wave sleep and a build-up of certain waste proteins, including those associated with some diseases, has been linked to disrupted or insufficient sleep.

As neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard said: "It's like turning on the dishwasher before you go to bed and waking up with a clean brain."

So what does this mean for hypnotherapy?

One of the most consistent things clients notice after beginning hypnotherapy is improved sleep quality, deeper, less fragmented sleep. And now we know that deeper sleep isn't just more restful. It's actively protective. Your brain needs it to clean up from the day.

Day 13: Did You Know Your Brain...
..is the only organ in your body capable of studying itself?

It has always interested me that our brains are the organ that tell us that the brain is the most important organ!
Every piece of neuroscience ever discovered. Every brain scan. Every insight into memory, emotion, trauma, or consciousness. All of it was produced by brains... investigating brains.

There is nothing else in the known universe quite like it. Three pounds of tissue that can contemplate its own existence, question its own patterns, and crucially, choose to change them. We aren't given a rule book or guidance.

So what does this mean for hypnotherapy?

That last part matters most. The brain's capacity for self-awareness is the foundation of everything we do combined with that guidance. Hypnotherapy harnesses that capacity guiding the brain into a state where it can observe its own patterns without judgment, and begin, gently and willingly, to do something different.

You are not your patterns. You are the brain that can notice them. Get in touch to harness it.
