According to the eight limbed path of Patañjali, aparigrahā is abstention from greed or hoarding. Even receiving gifts often implies a future obligation, thus we are bound and lose our sense of neutrality.
According to , aparigrahā is the ability to release ourselves from craving, and accepting that impermanence is part of life. Change is the only constant and when we let go of the need for control and holding onto things, we allow ourselves to experience a greater sense of freedom.
This is a challenge in a society that finds itself in the throws of late stage capitalism, where more is more, the word abundance gets thrown around like its a basic human right, and we begin to feel entitled to the materials things in life.
If we first consider brahmacarya (moderation), and the fact that there is nothing moderate about the use of GenAI, in relation to the resources it consumes for one single ChatGPT prompt (UNEP, 2024), then we know that perpetuating the need for it’s use, only contributes to more hoarding. We become reliant on it, rather than being able to think and act freely, for ourselves, using our own mind, and critical thinking.
Have you used GenAI to “create” content for you?
Are you a social media manager or mentor using GenAI to create content for those who are paying you for YOUR “expertise”?
Have you begun relying on GenAI to compose emails for you? Or create your lesson plans?
Are you losing the ability to think critically?
Are you being coerced into adopting it within your work environment?
How did you manage all of these things before GenAI came along to apparently make your life easier? And has it truly made your life easier, or are you simply reliant on something you never needed in the first place?
