Sometimes the most useful question is simply: “How do you feel now?”

At a follow-up, I want to hear about everyday life as well as the things we discussed at your first appointment. What has improved? What is still bothering you? What needs another look?

That's the conversation I love having. Save this as a reminder to jot down what you want to discuss at your next appointment.

When we talk about hormones during perimenopause and menopause, insulin deserves some attention too.

Insulin helps your body use glucose for energy. Insulin resistance means your body isn’t responding to it as well as it should.

That’s why I’m interested in the bigger picture when we talk about your health, including your stress levels, daily habits and metabolic health.

It’s about understanding how these different pieces fit together, rather than focusing on one hormone alone.

When sleep feels unsettled, it’s tempting to focus only on bedtime. But take a look at the rest of your day too.

Are. yougetting outside? When do you have your last caffeinated drink? Is there any space to wind down in the evening?

Choose one manageable habit to look at this week. If poor sleep is persistent or affecting daily life.

Have you heard of the so-called “Trojan horse drink”?

It came up in a recent conversation, and I wanted to share the idea behind the name.

The discussion centred on bicarbonate of soda and honey, and a theory that the sugar could act as a carrier for the bicarbonate. That proposed mechanism is where the “Trojan horse” comparison comes from.

A little look back at my health shop days

These photographs are from Bawtry Natural Health and Therapy Centre, the shop where we won “Best Health Shop in the UK”.

Looking at those shelves takes me straight back. Including the days when everyone suddenly wanted aduki beans and we could hardly keep up!

Behind all those products were people coming in with questions, wanting to understand more about food, nutrition and looking after themselves.

That interest in helping people understand their health is still very much part of what I do today.

Did any of you used to visit the shop? I’d love to hear your memories.

I love a follow-up, but you don’t have to arrive with a big success story.

Tell me what’s felt different, what’s still bothering you and anything you’ve found difficult. A few notes can help when you’re trying to remember the last few weeks.

Your experience matters, including the things that haven’t changed. That’s why I like us to write things down at the beginning and come back to them later.

How are you sleeping at the moment?

When sleep is unsettled, it can help to look at the ordinary things first: your routine, time outside in daylight, caffeine and how you wind down.

You don't have to overhaul everything tonight. Pick one manageable habit to look at this week. Which would be easiest to start with?

Ever wondered what your blood looks like under a microscope?

Here’s a glimpse of the magnified view, where you can observe blood cells and other structures in a small sample.

Looking at those images isn’t the same as having a diagnostic blood test, and changes in their appearance alone don’t prove that your health has improved.

A better night’s sleep can start in the morning ☀️

Getting outside into natural daylight helps your body clock recognise that it’s daytime and supports your sleep-wake routine.

It doesn’t have to mean a big morning workout. A gentle walk or a few minutes outside is a simple place to start.

We often focus on what we do before bed, but our morning habits deserve some attention too.

“Aren’t eggs useful” 🍳

George’s Nanna used to say this whenever there was a lull in conversation. It would get everyone joining in about why eggs were, indeed, useful!

And she had a point.

We talk a lot about their protein, but the yolks also contain choline. Your body uses this nutrient to make acetylcholine, a messenger involved in memory, and it also plays a role in normal liver function.

When I’m talking about eating well through perimenopause and menopause, eggs are one of the everyday foods worth remembering as part of a varied diet.

Boiled, scrambled, poached or made into an omelette. Plenty of possibilities from something so simple.

George’s Nanna was very right. Eggs are useful indeed.
