Finding the small print a little too small? 👀

If close-up vision isn’t as effortless as it used to be, you may be experiencing presbyopia - a common age-related change that affects the eye’s ability to focus clearly on things up close.

But here’s the important bit:

Reading glasses aren’t your only option.

Modern approaches to presbyopia can be tailored around your eyes, your age and - most importantly - how you actually use your vision.

👓 GLASSES
The simplest option, with reading, varifocal or occupational lenses depending on when and how you need near vision.

👁️ CONTACT LENSES
Options can include multifocal contact lenses or monovision, where one eye is corrected primarily for distance and the other for nearer vision.

✨ LASER VISION CORRECTION
For suitable patients, techniques such as blended vision may help increase the range of clear vision and reduce dependence on glasses.

🔬 REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE (RLE)
RLE involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens, using a procedure similar to cataract surgery. Different lens options are available, including enhanced monofocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF) and multifocal/trifocal lenses, each offering a different balance of distance, intermediate and near vision.

There isn’t one “best” treatment for presbyopia.

The most appropriate option depends on factors including your prescription, cornea, natural lens, overall eye health, age, occupation, hobbies and expectations - as well as how much independence from glasses you would like to achieve.

At Vale Eye Surgeons, we assess the whole eye before discussing the options that may be appropriate for you.

Your eyes have changed. Your options have too.

Dry Eye & IPL Therapy 👁️

Dry, gritty, irritated or uncomfortable eyes can be more than an occasional inconvenience. For some people, dry eye becomes a persistent problem that can affect comfort, vision and everyday life.

At Vale Eye Surgeons, we take an individual approach to dry eye, beginning with a specialist assessment to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

One common cause is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands in your eyelids produce the oily layer of your tears, helping to prevent them from evaporating too quickly. When these glands aren't functioning effectively, the tear film can become unstable.

Symptoms may include:

👁️ Dryness or grittiness
👁️ Burning, stinging or irritation
👁️ Red or watery eyes
👁️ Fluctuating or blurred vision
👁️ Tired or uncomfortable eyes

Depending on your assessment, one treatment option that may be considered is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy.

IPL uses controlled pulses of light applied to the skin around the eye area and may form part of the management of certain types of dry eye, including those associated with MGD.

Importantly, dry eye isn't the same for everyone.

That's why we assess your eye health and individual circumstances before recommending a management plan, which may include IPL alongside other treatment options where appropriate.

Our approach is simple:

🔎 ASSESS - understand your symptoms and eye health
💡 TREAT - recommend appropriate treatment options
👁️ MANAGE - develop a tailored plan for ongoing care

If you're regularly experiencing dry, gritty, irritated or uncomfortable eyes, a specialist assessment can help identify possible causes and the treatment options available to you.

Could IPL therapy be suitable for your eyes?

👁️ Screen time & dry eyes - is there a connection?

This National Eye Health Week, we’re shining a light on something many of us experience every day: prolonged screen use.

Whether you’re working on a laptop, scrolling on your phone, or watching TV, focusing on a screen can make us blink less often. Blinking is important because it helps refresh the tear film across the surface of the eye. When we blink less, tears can evaporate more quickly, which may contribute to dry, gritty or irritated eyes.

You might notice symptoms including:

👁️ Dryness or grittiness
💧 Watery eyes
🔴 Redness or irritation
🌫️ Temporary blurred vision
😣 Tired or uncomfortable eyes

One simple habit that can help when using screens is the 20-20-20 rule:

🕐 Every 20 minutes
👀 Look away for 20 seconds
📏 At something around 20 feet away

It’s a simple reminder to give your eyes regular breaks during prolonged screen use.

But if dry or uncomfortable eyes are becoming a persistent problem, there may be more going on than screen use alone.

At Vale Eye Surgeons, we offer specialist assessment for dry eye and treatment options, including Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy for suitable patients. Understanding what is contributing to your symptoms is an important first step towards finding an appropriate management plan.

This National Eye Health Week, make your eye health a priority.

Struggling with persistent dry eye symptoms? Contact our team to discuss your options.

Had cataract surgery, but noticed your vision becoming cloudy or hazy again? 👁️

In this video, Tom explains YAG laser capsulotomy - a quick outpatient laser procedure used to treat posterior capsule opacification (PCO), sometimes referred to as a “secondary cataract”.

PCO can develop when the thin membrane behind the artificial lens becomes cloudy following cataract surgery, causing vision to gradually become blurred or hazy again. It can occur months or even years after surgery.

So, what does YAG treatment involve?

The YAG laser creates a small, precise opening in the clouded capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again. There’s no incision, and the laser treatment itself takes just a few minutes.

At Vale Eye Surgeons, your consultant will first examine your eye to establish whether PCO is responsible for the change in your vision and advise whether YAG laser treatment is appropriate for you.

If you’ve previously had cataract surgery and have noticed a change in your vision, get in touch with our team to arrange an assessment.

3 changes in your vision you shouldn’t ignore 👁️

Changes to your eyesight can happen for many reasons, and some develop so gradually that they’re easy to overlook. However, new, sudden or worsening changes in your vision are worth paying attention to.

Here are three changes you shouldn’t ignore:

👁️ Sudden changes in vision
A sudden loss of vision, new blurring or another noticeable change should be taken seriously and may require prompt assessment.

✨ Flashes or new floaters
Floaters can look like dots, lines or shapes moving across your vision. If flashes or floaters appear suddenly or noticeably increase, you should seek professional advice promptly.

🔍 Persistent blurred or distorted vision
Vision that remains blurred, hazy or distorted - particularly when it is new or becoming progressively worse - should be investigated to understand the underlying cause.

There are many possible reasons for changes in vision, and an eye examination can help determine what may be happening and whether further assessment or treatment is required.

Noticed a change in your eyesight? Don’t ignore it.

Contact Vale Eye Surgeons to arrange a specialist assessment, or seek urgent eye care where symptoms are sudden or severe.
