Today belongs to Archie Goodburn. 🩶
This is a landmark moment for our community. Following Archie’s meeting with the Prime Minister and Health Secretary, the Government has announced a new package of commitments aimed at getting new brain cancer treatments from research to patients faster.
This includes an immediate expert review and national action plan, a dedicated national brain cancer clinical lead, action to speed up access to promising new treatments, and a new drive to help more people find and take part in clinical trials.
Since his diagnosis, Archie has spoken with extraordinary honesty about living with brain cancer. He has challenged why trials available elsewhere in the world are not always reaching patients in the UK, and called on the Government to act.
Today, that voice has been heard at the highest level.
Will Jones, Chief Executive of brainstrust, said:
“This is a landmark day for everyone affected by a brain tumour. Today’s steps show what happens when a community speaks with one voice and Government listens.”
We’re hugely grateful to Archie for the courage and determination he has shown, and to the patients, families, clinicians, researchers and charities whose work over many years has helped bring us to this point.
Today brings real hope. Hope of new treatments reaching people faster. Hope of more people being able to find and join clinical trials. And stronger national leadership to help turn progress in research into meaningful change for patients.
Archie’s story is also a powerful reminder that your voice matters.
Today’s announcement is an important beginning. Now the work is to make sure these commitments translate into change that people affected by a brain tumour can see and feel.
