At Therapy Foundations for Education, we take a holistic, trauma-informed approach to understanding your child’s development, sensory processing, movement, regulation and everyday experiences

A comprehensive developmental and family history

An approximately 1.5-hour assessment with two therapists

Clinical observation and play, and movement-based activities

Exploration of sensory systems, coordination, motor skills and primitive reflexes where clinically relevant

Consideration of developmental experiences, relationships and individual strengths

🤝 Connection comes first. We adapt activities to your child and aim to better understand their unique needs, strengths and support requirements

Therapy is not a place you go to feel better in the moment and then return to the same patterns

Done well, it builds a set of skills, insights and capacities that change how you move through your life long after sessions have ended

This final post in the series is about what that looks like in practice

Not vague concepts but real, concrete tools for managing fear, anxiety and mood that are grounded in neuroscience and embodied through experience

The difference between coping and capacity: Coping gets you through the moment. Capacity changes what moments feel like

The goal of integrative therapy is not to teach you to endure difficult experiences better, it is to change your nervous system's relationship with difficulty so those experiences land differently in the first place

The lasting skills built through integrative therapy:

Nervous system literacy - Knowing which state you are in, activated, collapsed or regulated and what it means. This is not introspection. It is the difference between being swept away by a state and being able to observe and influence it

Somatic grounding on demand - The breathing techniques, body-based anchors and sensory tools practised in sessions become instinctive. You do not have to think about them in a crisis your body already knows them

Trigger awareness and pause - The gap between stimulus and response which began at zero and felt like no choice at all, gradually widens. In that gap lives real choice where there was none before

Belief flexibility - The ability to hold your own thoughts and beliefs with curiosity rather than certainty, not accepting every self-critical or fear-driven thought as fact. This alone changes your internal landscape

Emotional understanding and expression - Being able to name what you are feeling, notice where it is in your body and communicate it, rather than suppressing it or being overwhelmed by it

Self-compassion as a practice - Not as a concept but as an embodied response. The ability to meet your own distress with the same warmth you would offer a person you love. This is one of the most protective mental health capacities a human being can develop

Relational security - A changed sense of what is possible in relationships, built through the experience of genuine co-regulation and repair in the therapeutic relationship

This is the arc of integrative therapy, from the first grounding breath to the lasting shift in how you experience being yourself in the world

Every stage matters! Every stage is connected! And every stage is possible for you!

One of the most important things neuroscience has confirmed in recent decades is something that good therapists have always known

The relationship itself is the therapy. Not just the context for it

Co-regulation is the process by which one nervous system helps another to regulate

As infants, we cannot self-regulate at all. We rely entirely on a calm, attuned caregiver to help us settle, feel safe and return to baseline after distress

That capacity for self-regulation develops gradually but only if we have enough early experiences of being co-regulated by someone who was genuinely present and safe

What co-regulation is not:

It is not being told to calm down. It is not someone solving the problem for you. It is not distraction or reassurance

It is one person's regulated, grounded presence - their steady breathing, their calm tone, their unhurried attention. The nervous system of another person
synchronises with, often without either person being fully aware it is happening

How co-regulation works in integrative therapy:

The therapist's regulated nervous system is the first tool. Before any technique or approach, the therapist's own grounded, present state provides a neurobiological template that the client's nervous system can orient toward

This is why therapists invest deeply in their own regulation

Attunement - Being genuinely seen. When a therapist accurately reflects what a client is experiencing, not just the words but the feeling beneath them, it activates the same neural pathways that were shaped by early caregiving

Being seen at this level is profoundly regulating

Repair after rupture - When misunderstanding or disconnection happens in the therapeutic relationship, and it will, the process of acknowledging it and repairing it is itself deeply healing

Many clients have never experienced a relationship where rupture was followed by genuine repair. Learning that it can be is transformative

Co-regulation is never the destination; it is the bridge. Every experience of feeling regulated in relationship becomes a template the nervous system can begin to reproduce independently

Over time the external scaffolding of the therapeutic relationship gives way to internal capacity

This is why the quality of the relationship with your therapist matters more than any specific technique

When our nervous system has enough safety and you have begun to understand your triggers, something remarkable becomes possible

Genuine curiosity about the belief systems that were built around your experiences. This is where the deeper transformational work of integrative therapy begins

Belief systems are not abstract ideas

They are conclusions the mind drew from lived experience and stored as facts
"I am not enough." "People leave." "It is not safe to need things." "If I am not useful, I am not welcome"

These beliefs run beneath conscious thought, shaping every decision, every relationship and every self-assessment

How do beliefs become invisible?

When a belief is formed and reinforced often, the brain stops questioning it. It becomes the lens through which every new experience is filtered

You are not thinking the belief, you are thinking through it. That is why insight alone rarely changes things. The belief has to be found, named and gently examined
What getting curious looks like in therapy

Noticing the belief without judgement - "When I feel criticised, I hear: I am flawed." Not analysing it, just naming it. That naming alone creates distance between the self and the story

Asking where it came from - Not to blame anyone but to understand that a belief formed by a seven year old trying to make sense of their world was the best interpretation available at the time and may not be the truth now

Making connections - Linking the belief to the trigger to the physical sensation to the behaviour. Building a complete picture of how one original experience has been echoing through present-day life. This is the moment things begin to make sense in a new way

The most important question in therapy is not 'what is wrong with me?' It is 'what happened to me and what did I decide it meant?' Those are very different questions, with very different answers"

This stage of therapy is where people often say things like "I've never seen it like that before" or "I didn't realise how long I'd been carrying that." These moments are not the end of the work. They are the beginning of something genuinely new

Most people arrive in therapy knowing they have triggers

Situations, people, sensations or words that set off a strong reaction they can't seem to control

What very few people understand is that the trigger is not the real issue

It is a signal pointing toward something deeper that needs attention

Getting curious about triggers rather than just trying to avoid or suppress them is one of the most transformative shifts that happens in integrative therapy

This begins with understanding that triggers operate on multiple levels at once

What is a trigger?

An internal or physiological reaction that happens in the moment

Our nervous system connects this moment to an experience of threat or pain

Your body is not overreacting. It is pattern-matching at a speed faster than conscious thought

The three levels of a trigger:

Sensory and environmental triggers - A smell, a sound, a quality of light, a tone of voice, a texture, a temperature

Sensory input that was present during a difficult experience can activate the nervous system's memory of that experience without any conscious recognition

"I don't know why that affected me" is often sensory triggering

Relational triggers - A person's body language, a particular phrase, the feeling of being ignored or criticised, the experience of being watched or evaluated

These often map onto early relational experiences, particularly with caregivers and can activate very old survival responses in adult relationships

Internal state triggers - Certain physical states, hunger, tiredness, physical pain, feeling hot or confined, can themselves be triggering

Particularly for people whose early experiences of those states were associated with fear or neglect

Before therapy - "I just react. I can't help it. I always feel this way in that situation and I don't know why."

After working with triggers - "I can feel it starting. I know what's happening in my body. I have a moment of choice I didn't have before."

You cannot choose a different response to a trigger you cannot notice coming. Therapy makes the invisible visible and that moment of visibility is where freedom begins

In therapy, understanding triggers is never about blame

It is about building a map of your own nervous system so you can navigate it with awareness rather than being overwhelmed by it

Most of those breaths are doing nothing for your nervous system

These ones will

Breathing is the only automatic function in the body that you can also consciously control

That makes it uniquely powerful and a direct line between your conscious mind and your nervous system

When you know how to use it, you have a regulation tool available to you at any moment of any day

Somatic breathing simply means breathing in a way that works with the body, not against it

The goal is not to breathe more but to breathe in a pattern that activates the parasympathetic nervous system - the part of our nervous system responsible for rest, calm and restoration

The science in one sentence: A longer exhale than inhale activates the vagus nerve - the primary pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system. This signals to the entire body that it is safe to settle

This is not a relaxation trick. It is physiology

Somatic breathing techniques used in therapy:

Physiological sigh - A double inhale through the nose followed by a long exhale through the mouth

This pattern collapses air sacs in the lungs that have become overinflated during anxiety and produces the fastest-known reduction in physiological stress of any breathing technique

Extended exhale breathing - Breathe in for 4 counts. Breathe out for 6 to 8 counts. The longer out-breath is the key, it is what activates the calming response

In therapy breathing techniques are not given as homework. They are practised until they become instinctive, so that when you need them most your body already knows what to do

These techniques are taught and practised within sessions so they become genuine tools

Not instructions you read once and forget

Over time they become your body's default response to stress rather than panic, shutdown or overwhelm
