Stress does not always feel like stress
Stress does not always arrive with the thought:
“I feel stressed.”

Sometimes it looks much more physical.
Your jaw stays clenched without you noticing.
Your shoulders gradually creep upwards.

Your breathing becomes shallower.

You feel exhausted but still find it difficult to properly switch off.

Or your body seems permanently braced, even when nothing particularly stressful is happening at that moment.

I spent many years in healthcare before moving into complementary therapy, and one thing I have become increasingly interested in is how much the body can reveal about the pressure we are carrying.

You do not necessarily need to feel stressed for prolonged pressure to influence how you breathe, move or hold yourself.

Sometimes the body notices it first.

What is the first place you tend to hold tension when life becomes busy?

If any of this feels familiar and you are noticing that stress or tension seems to be showing up physically, you are welcome to get in touch. I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation where we can talk about what you are noticing and what support might be appropriate.

What changes when you change your position?

Something I've noticed over the years is that the way a person moves can change depending on the position they're in.

Someone may find turning their head uncomfortable when sitting at a desk, yet notice a difference when standing.

Or reaching upwards may feel easier in one position than another.

It's tempting to assume the difficulty must lie entirely in the area where it's felt.

But movement involves coordination between different parts of the body.

The position of the ribcage, pelvis, shoulders and upper back may all influence what happens elsewhere.

This is one reason I look beyond the area someone initially mentions.

It doesn't mean that every restriction has a hidden cause somewhere else. Sometimes the painful area really is the main concern.

But looking at movement in context can give us useful information.

Here's something to consider.

Is there a movement you find easier standing than sitting, or the other way around?

I'd be interested to hear what you've noticed.

Where it hurts is not always where the pattern began

The body is remarkably good at adapting.

If one area is not moving particularly well, another area may quietly take over some of the work.

For a while, you may not notice anything at all.
Then eventually something starts to complain.

A hip becomes uncomfortable.

A shoulder repeatedly tightens.

Your lower back starts objecting after walking or sitting.

It is tempting to assume that the painful area is where the problem started.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it is the area that has simply been doing more than its fair share.

When I look at posture and movement, I am often interested in what is happening above, below and even on the opposite side of the body.

Where it hurts matters, but so does the pattern around it.

If you keep finding yourself dealing with the same uncomfortable area and would like to look at the wider picture, get in touch to arrange a free 15 minute telephone consultation. It is a simple way to talk through what you have been experiencing before deciding whether to book a session.

New Vision Therapy Level 1 is practical and hands on. Participants are introduced to the approach and have the opportunity to practise and experience the Level 1 protocol.

New Vision Therapy is the work of Chris Duquemin. I help promote and host Level 1 training in Fife when workshops are arranged.

There is no confirmed date for the next workshop yet.

If you would like to know when a future Fife date is announced, message me NVT.

We check so many things when it comes to our health.

Our eyes.
Our teeth.
Our blood pressure.
Routine health checks.

Sometimes we check these things before there is an obvious problem.

So why not check in with the wider picture too?

A voice scan uses a short recording of your voice as a wellness check in.

It can offer a snapshot of patterns that may be worth exploring, including stress load, emotional strain, energy levels and areas that may feel out of balance.

It is not a diagnosis, not a medical test and not a replacement for your GP or other healthcare.

Think of it as a supportive wellness check in.

A pause to ask:

How am I doing?
What may need support right now?
Is anything asking for my attention?

See what your voice may reveal.

The symptom may only be part of the story
Pain has a way of demanding all our attention.

If your shoulder hurts, naturally you focus on the shoulder. If your back keeps tightening, that becomes the problem you want fixed.

But the area making the most noise is not necessarily the only area involved.

Posture, movement, stress and the way the body has been compensating over time can all influence how load is being distributed.

Sometimes what I notice when working with someone is that the painful area makes much more sense once we look at what the rest of the body is doing.

That is why I am interested in the whole pattern, not just the place that hurts.

The symptom may only be part of the story.

Have you ever had discomfort in one part of your body that turned out to be connected to somewhere completely different?

If this has made you think about your symptoms a little differently and you’re wondering what else may be contributing, get in touch to book a free 15 minute telephone consultation. We can have a chat about what has been happening and whether my approach may be suitable for you.

Shopping bags can reveal a familiar habit.

One arm carries everything, one shoulder rises, and the other side quietly adjusts. There is no single perfect way to carry things, but noticing the pattern may make you curious about how effort is shared.

Next time you carry bags, simply notice which side volunteers first.

The jaw sometimes gets involved in a busy day without asking permission.

I have met many people who only notice jaw tension once they stop talking or working. It can also have dental and medical causes, so new or persistent jaw symptoms deserve appropriate advice.

If this feels familiar, you are welcome to arrange a free 15 minute telephone consultation to discuss the wider picture.

Those first few steps after you stand up can feel surprisingly different.

After sitting for a while, your body is moving from one set of demands to another. Rather than judging yourself as stiff, notice how the movement changes once you are comfortable walking.

Have you noticed that transition? You can message me if you would like to ask about the way I approach posture and movement.

What actually happens when you come to see me?

We begin with a conversation.

You do not need to arrive knowing which therapy you need, and you do not need to have found the perfect words to explain what you have been noticing.

I will ask about what has brought you, what has changed and anything else that may be relevant.

Depending on the approach, I may observe how you stand or move, or ask you to notice what feels easy and what requires more effort.

Some sessions involve gentle hands on work. Others may include movement, postural observations or a different way of exploring the wider pattern.

I explain what I am doing, and you can ask questions at any point.

The purpose is not to force your body into a particular response. It is to work carefully and individually with what is present.

What would you want to know before arranging a first session?
