Perception vs Experience: how can we bridge the gap between how well professionals feel they are supporting families through transitions and the actual experience of parents and carers?

At Scotland we provide information, resources and support to help address the challenges identified in our recently published Compass National Data Report and we will soon launch new tools for professionals to support better transitions.

We believe that together we can achieve The Scottish Government Strategy's vision that every young person with additional support needs feels confident in their transition to adulthood and are empowered and supported to control their own path to success.

Are you a parent and carer of a young person navigating transition to adulthood? We are here to help!

Have you seen our new data on transitions? πŸ“Š

Last week we published the Compass National Data Report 2025-26. It paints a clear picture of the current journey to adulthood for young people with additional support needs in Scotland.

We are seeing some positive changes, but there is more work to do.

We hope that the findings will help to support all partners – Scottish Government, local authorities, health boards, and service providers – to understand where to best focus their efforts and resources to improve support for young people and their families.

Today we publish crucial new data on transitions.

The Compass National Data Report 2025-26 paints a clear picture of the current journey to adulthood for young people with additional support needs in Scotland.

To you parents and carers out there, the findings likely won’t come as a surprise.

The data tells us that professionals in supporting roles are making some positive shifts. But moving into adulthood continues to be a difficult journey for young people with additional support needs and their families.

The report reflects the real, everyday experiences of young people, families, and frontline professionalsβ€”highlighting both the strides made and the gaps we urgently need to bridge together.

We ARC Scotland have been working with The Scottish Government to fill these gaps and will soon be realising expanded tools for professionals to support better transitions.

Do you need support?

If you are a parent and carer of a young person navigating transitions to adulthood, you don’t have to do it alone:

πŸ’Š Good medication support starts with knowledgeable, confident people

That’s why ARC Scotland has refreshed our medication training offer for social care.

Our Managing Medication course supports supervisors and managers to explore the responsibilities that sit behind good medication practice, from staff competence and safe practice to risk assessment, medication errors, support planning and organisational responsibilities.

Our Medication Train the Trainer course takes the next step, helping people develop the skills and confidence to make medication training engaging and meaningful for their own teams.

The course explores different approaches to learning, recognising and responding to participants’ learning needs, preparation, reflection and building confidence in delivering training. Participants also complete ARC Scotland’s medication e-learning before attending the one-day course.

Better learning. More confident practice. Better support for people.

Where are we at with transitions to adulthood for young people with additional support needs in Scotland?

On October 1st we will address this question with the launch of our Compass national data report 2025-26.

Through Compass, our digital personalised guide to transitions in Scotland:

β€’ We asked young people if they are being listened to.

β€’ We asked parents and carers if they are being supported.

β€’ We asked professionals if they feel able to support good transitions.

The report will share national data from the first year of The Scottish Government National Transitions to Adulthood Strategy for Young Disabled People, making comparisons with experiences and data from the previous year to reveal what progress has been made.

After the launch we will explore what these findings mean for professionals working alongside families, in particular how ARC Scotland upcoming new tools and resources can help to improve transitions support.

πŸŽ‰ Fife Council commits to the Principles into Practice programme!

Our policy and development workers, Rebecca Williams and Lauren Lockhart, attended an in-person event to launch the transition guidance for children and young people with additional and complex support needs.

This guidance has been written by an appointed Lead Officer for Transitions who was tasked with pulling together statutory and local guidance - including the Principles of Good Transitions - into one document for multi-agency professionals to establish a consistent transition pathway for young people in Fife.

The launch event was a great success, with over 100 service representatives attending to discuss changes to the current process and quality assurance procedures. A follow-up online presentation was also delivered for those unable to make it in person.

We are delighted to have Fife Council on board and fully committed to embedding the Principles of Good Transitions into everyday practice. πŸ‘

We are delighted to be represented at the strategic advisory group for Qualifications Scotland. We are an assessment centre for Vocational Qualifications and we're hoping to offer Modern Apprenticeships in the near future. We already are a delivery partner for a local authority helping them to fulfil their MA contract. πŸ‘

Lauren Lockhart, our policy and development worker for the Scottish Transitions Forum, is a newly appointed member of the council and is offering insight into support for young people with additional support needs to experience a good transition after school. πŸŽ‰

We are pleased that Qualifications Scotland has a strong focus on equalities and flexibility within the qualifications offer so that all young people have an equal chance to succeed at school!
